LB's Get Warmed Up and Work on Stance! LB's Get Warmed Up and Work on Stance!

So far, the Tryouts have been a blast!

Team MD/DC #1:  Riverdale Baptist School July 21st
We started the evaluation season on a rainy day in July!  It was the morning before our Championship Game and it was a torrential downpour.  We had over 60 kids registered, but only 38 showed up because of the downpour.  We still got it in though.  There was some terrific talent on display.

8th Grade Standouts:
RB/LB Ryan Vessels (PG Chargers) is a physical specimen at 5'9 and 177lbs.  He was very impressive from both the RB position, as well as the LB position.  We haven't made final selections yet, but it would be very hard to keep him off of this team.

OL/DL Naasir Watkins (South Bowie), an FBU All Star alum from last year got bigger and better.  At 6' and 218lbs with a mean streak, he was very impressive, as was 5'8 145lb FBU All Star Alum Khory Spruill (Spirit of Faith) who showed a great burst as he ran a blazing 4.9 forty in the cold and rain.

FBU All Star QB alum Dion Golatt (Spirit of Faith) and QB Sam Brown from Anne Arundel County dueled it out for QB supremacy.  Both were very impressive throwing in the rain.

7th Grade Standouts:
RB/DB Donovan Grant (Spirit of Faith) caught our eye on both sides of the ball.  We first saw him in 2010 as a 5th grader at our PG County combine where he showed potential and it is obvious that he has been working hard on his craft.

WR/DB Derek Brown (Gorc Wildcats) received four scores of 4 out of 5 for both his WR and DB drills.  He ran a smoking 40 at our combine at Sports and Learning in March and can really pick them up and put them down.  Trained with Brian Bell (current Strenghth coach for Penn State) and the work is paying off.

6th Grade Standouts:
WR/DB Joshua McTier was solid all day long at both positions and OL/DL Harrison Wallace was dominant on the OL/DL.

Team Northern VA #1 St. Stephens/St. Agnes July 29th
Due to a late marketing push, we did not get many to come out for the first NoVA tryout, but the 10 that we did get included some familiar faces to the GYFL.

8th Grade Standouts:
OL/DL Johnny Jordan and OL/DL Daniel Renaud are simply ferocious football players.  They actually tried out at the Riverdale Camp, but we moved their results over here since they WILL most likely be playing on the Northern VA squad.  Jordan, at 6'1 and 204lbs, manhandled 8th graders in the GYFL when he was a 7th grader playing for the Loudoun County Eagles, and he was dominant at this camp.

As was the 5'8, 217lb Renaud who is like a fire hydrant with legs.  This kid is pure football player.  Should make the team and if both Johnny and Daniel make it, they will start side by side on the Northern VA line as they did in Grassroots this summer.

OL/DL Jonte Craig, WR/LB Zion Johnson, and RB/DL Keith Evans all starred for the Prince William County Lions in the GYFL and performed excellent at the camp.  QB Jayden Riley, who was recovering from knee surgery last summer and could not participate threw with accuracy and velocity.

7th Grade Standout:
RB/LB Andrew Irving (Dale City Sports Club) was fast and exhibited a highly refined skillset for a 7th grader.

Team MD/DC Tryout #2 Gilman School Sept 9th
Our 2nd MD/DC Tryout was not very big, with about 22 kids altogether.  Those that showed were in for a treat as the Gilman coaching staff took them through all the drills and provided instruction.  Gilman, fresh off of a huge win over the 2011 HS National Champion Don Bosco Prep the day before at the Patriot Classic at Navy Stadium, was very gracious with their field and their time.

8th Grade Standouts:
We have not completed the detailed breakdown yet and transferred it over to the spreadsheet yet, but there were 3 kids who clearly stood out to us from memory.

WR/DB Mohamed Ibrahim (Hamilton) displayed sensational cover skills.  We first saw Ibrahim at last years tryouts where he wowed the crowd and was selected to the 7th grade team.  He was unable to participate last year, but has another great shot to make it this year.

WR/DB Davon Williams (Hamilton) is another in a long line of elite Hamilton players.  Great body, strong, fast and quick.  Williams has the whole package.  RB/LB Anthnony Tucker (Also from Hamilton), an FBU alum has gotten bigger and stronger and looked very good as a LB prospect.

WR/LB Noah Talyor came all the way down from Delaware with his flash training gear on, which means he is a finely tuned athlete because Duane Thomas is known for his intense workouts.  Taylor is a specimen with great height and athleticism, who should be an asset if he makes the team.

More updates to come from this camp once the details are posted.

Team MD/DC Tryout #4 DeMatha's Heurich Field Sept 16th
We are fresh off of this evaluation where over 50 elite athletes were in attendance.  Montgomery Village came strong to the mic like they always do with a number of talented players.

8th Grade Standouts:
QB and FBU Alum Dion Golatt (Spirit of Faith) showed up for his second tryout with RB/DB and FBU Alum Khory Spruill (Spirit of Faith).  Both were impressive again.

QB Golatt found himself in another QB Duel with Montgomery Village's Travis Nannen, who looks the part.  Has great size and was very accurate and competitive.  RB Sprull was good once again, as he was at Riverdale.

The cream of the crop was Cam Spence (St. Stephens Middle/Anne Arundel Admirals).  Spence is a true beast of a young man with a frame grown men would die for.  About 6'3 and 260lbs.  Lean, mean OT/DT, who desires to play some TE.

Another truly impressive performer was FB/LB Arik Smith from Old Mill.  If Spence is the prototype lineman, Smith is certainly the prototype fullback.  5'10 and 200lbs.  Good speed, explosive, and powerful.  Will be a star at the next level and showed the potential on Sunday.

More to come as we process all the information.
