Game #1

Baltimore 26, Prince Georges 6

In a surprising twist, the Baltimore Metro team demolished a talent laden Prince George’s squad.  Prince George’s was favored by many to win the GYFL Championship this year because of some of the big names on their roster, but Baltimore had different thoughts and played like they had something to prove.  Tyrone Johnson of the Northwest Bulldogs is the General Manager and head coach.  He has assembled a fine coaching staff and a boat load of talent on that Baltimore team and they came ready to play.  Alvin Brown of the PG Chargers, is the GM for Prince Georges County All Stars.  He has a great staff as well, made up of a combination of coaches from Wise HS to go along with some exceptional youth club coaches from the county.  Both appeared to be ready to kick off the first ever GYFL Football game in league history.  Boy….. Did the league start off with a bang!!!  It could not have been scripted any better.

The opening kickoff featured a scintillating 85 yard touchdown by Jonathan Haden.  Jonathan, younger brother of the Cleveland Browns #1 draft pick Joe Haden, is one of the most exciting players in the entire Washington Metropolitan Area and will be taking his considerable talents to Archbishop Carroll in the fall.  It appeared as though the Baltimore vs. Prince George’s matchup was going to live up to its billing.  But, that was not to be the case.

The Baltimore team took the ensuing kickoff and systematically worked their way down the field with a mixture of off tackle runs and misdirection plays.  The Baltimore Metro offensive line is downright mammoth in size.  It features Anthony Coxall and Raymond Jackson from the mighty Hamilton Optimist program, who weigh in at 259lbs, and 293lbs respectively.  Not to be outdone by Hamilton, Overlea produced Barry Goins at 210lbs and Orlando Brown Jr., who carries 365lbs on a 6’5” frame.  Orlando is the son of Orlando “Zues” Brown, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens.  That offensive line dominated and pounded on the quick and athletic, but much smaller Prince Georges County Defensive line.  Many of the Baltimore players will attend Dunbar in the fall.

Baltimore pounded the ball at Prince Georges in their opening drive with the legs of speedy and powerful tailback Eric Latham Jr. from Charm City, who rushed for 50 yards on the first drive alone, capping it off with a sweet 7 yard TD run off of the right side of the line behind Goins and Brown (DeMatha).  Latham injured his foot on the conversion attempt and did not return to the game.  Eddie Gross from Marlboro, appeared to make almost every tackle on the drive, but it was not enough to keep Baltimore out of the end zone.

Haden returned the next kickoff 23 yards for the next Prince Georges drive, which stalled after consecutive tackles in the backfield.  Quante Cornish from Charm City ran the punt back 32 yards and on the next play Maurice Williams from Liberty broke off tackle for a 29 yard touchdown to give Baltimore the lead 14 – 6 after a successful conversion attempt.

Raymond Jackson was dominant on the defensive line of scrimmage as well and will remind you of a young Jerry Ball.  He is short and compact, but very powerful and has an array of swim moves and spin moves that put offensive linemen at his mercy.  He was in the backfield all day.  He forced a fumble on the next possession, which was recovered by Prince Georges, but 2 plays later his pressure forced and errant throw by Jamal Brown (McNamara), which was intercepted by Justin Hawkins of Overlea.

Baltimore then showed that they could throw the ball also, as Jacques Adams launched a beautiful spiral down the right sideline that hit his twin brother Jordan in perfect stride for a 51 yard touchdown.  Baltimore ran the ball so effectively on the opening drive, that Prince Georges was set up perfectly for a play action pass.  The twins are both from the Randallstown youth club and thrilled the crowd with the scoring pass, which gave Baltimore a 20 – 6 lead.

The defensive pressure applied by Baltimore kept the heat on Quarterback Jamal Brown who threw a second interception right into the hands of Tamal Campbell from Charm City, who returned the ball 7 yards to give Baltimore another opportunity to add to the score.  At this point the crowd was stunned at the turn of events.

Prince Georges is an extremely talented team with the likes of Eddie Gross, a superstar RB/LB who is headed to McNamara, and Taiwan Deal, a TE/DE with a great combination of size and speed who will attend DeMatha in the fall.  They have size on the OL/DL with Malik and Maurice Flemming from Marlboro, who will play for Charles Harley at Forestville in the Fall.  Prince Georges also features one of the top seventh graders in the league, Deandre Kelly.  Kelly is a combination TE/DC who will be recruited by most of the top high schools in the region because of his combination of size (6’1” 185lbs) and tenacity.  He has a motor that just won't quit.

The Prince Georges All Stars feed from powerhouse youth programs from the Boys and Girls clubs like KLM, Marlboro, Forestville, etc. and feature some of the better players from the AYF League (PG Chargers, Spirit of Faith Warriors, and 301 Panthers).  Needless to say, the crowd was shocked as the Prince Georges team went to halftime down 20 – 6 with no momentum whatsoever.

Prince Georges came out in the second half with renewed vigor on defense.  Coach Woolfork and Coach Bullock from Wise HS must have given the kids a rousing speech because the defense came out on fire. Deale got it started with a sack for 8 yards.  On the next play, Kelly beat his block, turned the corner and crushed the quarterback Adams from behind causing a fumble.  The ball rolled back towards the Prince Georges end zone as Deal tried to scoop it up and run for a touchdown that would have turned the momentum of the whole game around, but he was unable to grab it and Baltimore’s Aubrey Moffet from Liberty recovered, bringing up fourth down for Baltimore instead of a touchdown for Prince Georges.  Disgusted by the missed opportunity, Deal broke free on the next play and sacked Quante Cornish to force a turnover on downs.  Prince Georges was back in business.

Unfortunately, the offense was not able to capitalize on the opportunity to get a first down and turned it back over on downs, which seemed to take the wind out of Prince Georges sails and undermine the defense.  As the fourth quarter rolled around, Baltimore was back to the ball controlled offense they so effectively used in the first half.  The held the ball for much of the quarter and converted a bobbled snap and fumble by Jamal Brown into another score on a 6 yard run by Tamal Campbell to close out the scoring for the day.  Baltimore ran behind Quante Cornish and Maurice Williams all day.  Cornish finished with 65 yards and Williams with 78.

On the defensive side of the ball for Baltimore, Dalontae Jennings from Liberty and Raymond Jackson were purely dominant.  Jackson made it difficult for the Prince George’s offense to do anything and Jennings was there to gobble up ball carriers all day.  Baltimore got a solid defensive effort from the entire squad.  Although Haden was the entire offense for Prince Georges in the kickoff return game, there were some defensive standouts that left it all on the field.  Eddie Gross made tackles all over the field and played terrific on defense with 10 tackles.  Taiwan Deale had 2 sacks and took on double teams all day, while Deandre Kelly showed why he is such a coveted prospect with a sack, 2 forced fumbles, and numerous QB pressures.

The final score was Baltimore Metro 26, Prince Georges 6

 Game #2

Fairfax County 35, Loudoun County 20

{flv}week-1-game-2{/flv}

The future of West Potomac High School football was on display in this epic battle.  Coach Eric Henderson, who doubles as the West Potomac head coach and the Fairfax All Stars head coach had several of his future players making big plays for him all day as Fairfax beat Loudoun in a barn burner of a game that was much closer than the final score would indicate.  General Manager Eric Levenberry, along with coach Henderson and the entire staff have put an excellent squad together.

Rusty Markland doubles as General Manager and Head Coach of the Loudoun squad.  Rusty, along with Larry Jenkins and the rest of the Loudoun staff have done a marvelous job of putting this Loudoun County team together and they most definitely brought their A-game.  It was truly a chess match and a battle of wits.  The game was deadlocked at 20 – 20 with 3 minutes left in the game before Fairfax got two late touchdown runs from dynamic dual-threat quarterback Ish Sesay (undecided).  Keep your eyes on this Sesay kid because he is special to watch.  He will remind people of a young version of Ohio State quarterback Tyrell Pryor, who is his idol by the way.  We understand that Lee HS, along with St. Stephens/St. Agnes are in the running for his considerable talents.  Whoever gets this kid will not be disappointed, as he put on an absolute show.

The game started out with excitement on the opening drive.  Loudoun went 3 and out on the opening drive but the punt was touched by a Fairfax player and recovered by Loudoun inside the 30 yard line by Atticus Keane.  Loudoun QB Will Hollister (Flint Hill, Georgetown Prep) who had a great game in his own right, immediately got Loudoun on the board with a 16 yard pass to Johnny Howard (Flint Hill) and a 6 yard TD to Hunter Ford (Briarwoods) off of a deflection.  Hollister is a great basketball player as well, but he is a classic drop back passer with great size and arm strength who has poise and can deliver the goods.  The extra point was good and Loudoun led 7 to 0.

Sesay and the Fairfax All Stars came right back down the field on the next possession.  He completed 3 passes on the drive to his favorite receiver Sam Gallahan (Lee, St. Stephens/St. Agnes), with the final one coming on an 18 yard TD.  Gallahan is tall, runs great routes and is hard to cover.  He had 9 catches on the day for 120 yards.  The extra point conversion was no good and Loudoun led 7 - 6.  After a few exchanges of punts, Sesay struck again with a 2 yard TD run after a 47 yard completion to Brennan Lane (DeMatha) and a 39 yard run by Phillip Tyler (West Potomac).  The 2 point conversion was good, giving Fairfax a 14 – 7 lead.

Hollister brought Loudoun right back down the field with his arm.  He completed a 30 yard pass to Brandon McGurk (Valley) and finished the drive with a 4 yard TD pass to Cole Herdman, who also had a great day.  The extra point was no good, which left the score at 14 – 13.  The next time Loudoun got the ball, Hollister led the War Eagles on another drive which culminated in a 21 yard TD pass to his favorite target Herdmann, giving Loudoun a 20 – 14  lead after a successful extra point.

Not to be outdone, Sesay and the Fairfax All Stars tied the game at 20 - 20 on a 17 yard TD pass from Sesay to Gallahan.  Loudoun was on the move again when Fairfax changed the momentum with an interception by Karee Boyens (undecided), which led to a string of turnovers by Loudoun.  On the next Loudoun drive Chris Sheckles (West Potomac) forced a fumble on a bone crushing tackle of Hollister.  The fumble was recovered by Jake Pinkston (Robinson), who made plays all over the field and was constantly double teamed in the second half to try to contain him.  Pinkston was a menace to Loudoun all day long.  Sesay had Fairfax in position to score again before a series of dropped passes stalled their next drive, which kept the score at 20 – 20 with 3 minutes left.

On Loudoun’s next possession, Ethan Hall (undecided) forced a fumble by Bryce Wince (Woodgrove), who was having a great day prior to the fumble.  Xavier Wicker (West Potomac) recovered the fumble which put the ball right back in Sesay’s hands.  On the next play, he made a great move on the left side and sprinted 22 yards for a touchdown.  He converted a 2 point conversion with a run around the left side, making the score at 28 to 20.  Loudoun sealed their fate with a fumble by Johnny Howard on the first play of the next drive.  Trevor O’Brien (West Potomac) who played well on offense and defense forced the fumble, which was recovered by Derien Pickett (West Potomac).

Putting the ball back in the hands of Sesay was a big mistake for Loudoun.  Trevor O’Brien and Sesay alternated carries for huge chunks of yards before Sesay found a crease on the left side of the field and took off for a 31 yard TD run to end the scoring for the day.  Extra point was good giving Fairfax a 35 to 20 victory over a well coached Loudoun squad.  Defensive standouts for Loudoun were Jonny Howard, Koosha Kassiri, and Brian Gianelos.  Jake Pinkston, Trevor O’Brien, and Chris Sheckles were dominant on defense for Fairfax.

The final score was Fairfax County 35, Loudoun County 20

Game #3

DC 18, Montgomery County 6

{flv}week-1-game-3{/flv}

This game featured the blazing speed and athleticism of the DC All Stars, who are not big, but are tough as nails and very scrappy, against the balance of speed and size on the Montgomery County side.  The Montgomery County squad features several kids going to WCAC power house high schools like Good Counsel and Gonzaga.  WR/DB Jalen Tabor and RB’s Robert Walker and Leo Ekwange are 3 highly recruited skill players that can do it all and Mont. County has a massive offensive line, led by Jemal Averrete, Sam Madaras, Darrin Myers, and Logan Portes.  All four of those kids will be anchoring that Good Counsel OL for years to come.

The expectation was that it would be a close, hard fought game, and although the score didn’t indicate it, the game was very competitive from start to finish.  Deandre Parker, Khari Williams, and Tony Hansford had coming out parties and showed that they would be a force in during the inaugural GYFL season.  DC is loaded with athletes at every position.

There was great coaching on both sides of the ball.  Montgomery County is led by General Manager and head coach Andy Steffaneli, who is also the freshman coach at Good Counsel.  He, Sal Gorgone and the rest of the staff did a great job of putting this squad together.  General Manager Rodney Cephas recruited a great team and coaching staff led by “Bink” .  The whole DC coaching staff had those kids ready to challenge the size and speed of Mont. County.

On Montgomery County’s opening drive, Robert Walker (Gonzaga) took a handoff behind left tackle Sam Madaras, got a great block by Abe Pishar (Georgetown Prep) and broke an exciting 58 yard TD run.  He cut back all the way across the field and showed an amazing burst of speed as he ran away from the super fast DC squad.  The TD was called back because of a holding penalty that was behind Walker and unnecessary.  A few plays later with the ball inside the 20, Colar Kuhns (Good Counsel) fumbled the snap and the ball was recovered by Jabari Robinson (Clarksburg) of DC.

DC’s first possession ended with a blocked punt by Sam Madaras that he also recovered.  That gave Mont Co the ball on the 1 yard line.  Leo Ekwange scored on a 2 yard TD run off the left side to give Mont Co a 6 – 0 lead.  The extra point was no good.  Khari Williams (undecided) took the kickoff back 48 yards on an electrifying run, only to be called back for too many men on the field.   Khari is arguably the fastest player in the GYFL.  His teammate Tony Hansford (undecided) may disagree and with his speed, he could make a strong argument.  On third and long, QB Deandre Parker saw Hansford running a post corner deep down the field with one-on-one coverage by Mont County’s star WR/DB Jalen Tabor.  It looked like Hansford, who truly has blazing speed, had a step on Tabor but his athleticism was tremendous and Tabor made a great play to break up a potential touchdown.

Mont. County had a 3 and out and on DC’s next possession, Deandre Parker (undecided) showed his arm strength and accuracy by dropping a beautiful spiral over the outstretched arms of DeVonte Williams and Roger Richardson of Mont County and right into the hands of Tony Hansford who caught the ball at the 40 and sprinted the rest of the way for the touchdown which tied the score at 6 – 6 after a failed extra point.  At this point, all 3 of these kids from DC are undecided on high school, but the schools that get them will be formidable for years to come.  Parker is undaunted in the pocket and has a quick release.  He can move in the pocket throw with accuracy and has great touch.  Appears to be athletic enough to pull it down and run with it, but he only runs when absolutely necessary.  He uses his feet to create confusion in the defensive backfield and give his receivers an opportunity to get open.

On DC’s next possession, Parker struck again.  He systematically moved the ball down the field through the air and capped off the drive with a 11 yard post pattern to Hansford that he threw on a rope.  Parker’s pass split the linebackers perfectly.  Hansford had to redeem himself because a few plays earlier he dropped a perfectly thrown potential touchdown pass from Parker after getting a step behind Tabor on a fly pattern.  The first half ended with the score at 12 – 6 DC.

There was not much scoring in the second half, but Khari Williams broke the game open with a 46 yard interception of a Colar Kuhns pass.  Kuhns was attempting to throw a quick slant but Williams read it and stepped right in front of the receiver.  Once he caught the ball there was nobody that would be able to catch him.  He sprinted down the sidelines for the touchdown that gave DC some a comfortable lead.

The rest of the game was as defensive struggle with Mont. County having a number of possessions with opportunities to score, but with their top 2 tailbacks (Walker and Ekwang) being injured early in the 2nd half it was too difficult to come back.  Their best opportunity to close the gap came early in the 4th quarter when QB Bryan Strittmatter rolled out to the left on a run/pass option and chose to run.  He had Tabor open in the left corner of the end zone but chose to run for the touchdown instead.  He was tackled at the 1 yard line by Juwan Hakim (Ceasar Chavez).  The DC defense made big plays and kept them out of the end zone.  The 4th down attempt was stopped and DC got the ball back.

Garvin Broom, Devon Cannon, and Perry Steffanelli had terrific games on defense for Mont. County.  On the DC defensive side of the ball, Fahim Muhammad was all over the field making tackles.  Brian Smith was a terror as well and Diamond Johnson had 2 sacks to go along with his 3 tackles.

The final score was 18 – 6 DC over Mont. County.
