Week 2

Game Recaps

 Game #1

Fairfax 33, Southern Maryland 0

 {flv}week-2-game-1{/flv}

The Fairfax All Stars led by multi-talented quarterback Ish Sesay picked up right where they left off in week 1 by demolishing Southern Maryland in the opening game of the second week of GYFL action.  Fairfax Head Coach Eric Henderson and his staff have the team organized and well prepared and they are going to be tough to beat.  Southern Maryland had a bye in the first week and had the misfortune of opening up against what appears to be the class of the GYFL at this point in the season.

After a turnover on downs on Southern Maryland’s first possession, which was shut down with dominant defense led by Jake Pinkston and Derian Pickett, the Fairfax All Stars took over on the Southern Maryland 27 yard line.  It only took Sesay one play before he was lighting up the scoreboard.  Sesay picked up a fumbled hand off to Phillip Tyler, made a quick move, darted to the right sideline and turned on a burst of speed before slipping into the end zone for the first score of the day.

After 2 consecutive sacks on the next possession by Pinkston, Sesay and the Fairfax All Stars took over again.  Sesay lined up in the shotgun, faked a handoff and lofted a beautiful 19 yard TD pass to his favorite receiver Sam Gallahan.  Gallahan beat 2 defenders to the left corner of the end zone and the pass was perfect.  After the conversion, Fairfax was up 14 – 0 before the crowd was able to get comfortable.

The Fairfax defense took over the game at this point as they swarmed the Southern Maryland offense with constant pressure.  The next possession ended on a 15 yard interception return by Derian Pickett.   Sesay had the Fairfax team on the move once again.  He completed a 17 yard strike to Randy Cooper to move the chains, while Demornay Pierson had a couple of nice runs on the ground.  Sesay then struck again from with a sensational 26 yard TD run where he faked out several Southern Maryland All Stars in the backfield, broke up the middle, shook a linebacker and sprinted to the left sideline to make the score 21 – 0.

Although Southern Maryland was unable to sustain any drives up to this point in the game, Tahir Tyler was able to distinguish himself as a top caliber running back.  He had several big runs in the first half and showed a burst of speed, agility, and power.  With the addition of Rafiq Douglas, a 5’11” 203 bruiser of a FB/LB, Southern Maryland should be tougher in week 2.  Rafiq was not available for the Southern Maryland opener.  Tyler’s talent alone just wasn’t enough to get his team on the scoreboard.  Michael Gyamfi was all over the field on defense with several tackles and ended Southern Maryland’s last possession before the half with a 12 yard sack of QB Dequan Chappelle, who was under duress all game long.

Caleb Henderson took over the QB role for Fairfax and the train kept rolling on the last drive before the half.  Phillip Tyler had a succession of nice runs behind mammoth offensive lineman Johathan Sackey-Addo and Henderson hit Joshua Perez on a pinpoint lob pass to the sideline for 20 yards.  Perez did a great job of dragging one foot in bounds before stepping out to finish the play.  Henderson finished the drive off with a great fake and a one yard pass to Tyler for the touchdown taking the game into halftime with the score 27 – 0.

Coach Gary Wynn of the Southern Maryland All Stars had the squad fired up for the second half and they stopped Fairfax for the first time during the first possession.  Unfortunately, their first offensive play ended with fumbled pitch, which was recovered by Jake Pinkston.  The Southern Maryland defense did not give up though and Liam Murphy caused a fumble of his own on a tackle of Sam Gallahan.  The fumble was recovered by Nathaniel Taylor who made several tackles during the game for Southern Maryland.

Southern Maryland’s offense was not able to take advantage of the inspired defensive play and was forced to punt.  The snap was high and Michael Gyamfi made another big play by tackling the punter before he could get the punt off.  On the next play, Sesay struck again.  Fairfax showed another wrinkle with their offense by running an option to the left side of the field.  Sesay made a couple of great fakes and drew the entire defense to him before making a perfect left handed pitch to Demornay Pierson who almost walked into the end zone for the final score of the day.

Fairfax did not try to run up the score and played more conservatively throughout the rest of the game.  Southern Maryland continued to play hard and had a 21TD pass from Chappelle to Andre Broussard called back for a penalty that almost gave them some momentum.  Tahir Tyler made a couple of breathtaking moves and hard runs before the final whistle, but it was not enough to get Southern Maryland on the scoreboard.

On the defensive side of the ball for Fairfax, Derien Pickett led the way with 6 tackles and an interception from his linebacker position.  He broke up another pass with a bone jarring hit on the sidelines.  Jake Pinkston made it virtually impossible for Southern Maryland to get into a rhythm with 5 tackles, 2 sacks, and a fumble recovery.  Michael Gyamfi was relentless all day with his speed coming off of the corner.  He had 2 sacks to go along with 5 tackles.  For Southern Maryland, not only was Tyler impressive on offense, but he also had 6 tackles and a pass deflection from his linebacker spot.  Ethan Hall also had a good day on defense with 4 tackles.

The final score was Fairfax County 33, Southern Maryland 0

 Game #2

DC 22, Loudoun County 7

{flv}week-2-game-2{/flv}

The DC All Stars, who had an impressive victory over the Montgomery County All Stars in the opening week, ran into a feisty Loudoun County squad that was playing without its star quarterback Will Hollister.  Loudoun has been without two of its best players in both games so far.  In the opening thriller against Fairfax, Loudoun played without Troy Vincent Jr., son of the All Pro NFL cornerback.  This time without Hollister, Loudoun knew they would be in for an uphill battle.  DC was also not at full strength during the first week without Darez Diggs, younger brother of Good Counsel’s Stephon Diggs.  Both teams were missing important pieces to their puzzles, but with the quarterback position being so vital to an offensive attack, DC felt very confident going into the game.

Loudoun started out with all the momentum in this game after DC quarterback Deandre Parker fumbled a snap during its first possession.  Koosha Kassiri recovered the fumble and Loudoun was in business early in the first quarter.  Loudoun started the game pounding the ball at the smaller DC defense with Bryce Wince getting multiple carries right up the middle.  The drive stalled as the DC defense stiffened behind the inspired play of Burke Davis, who was making tackles all over the field.  Loudoun stopped DC in their second possession as well and got on the scoreboard first as Caleb Trump broke through the line and blocked a punt by Parker.  Tucker Langmead recovered the block in the end zone for the first touchdown of the game.  Loudoun led 7 – 0 after the conversion as the stunned crowd looked on.

On DC’s next possession, Deandre Parker showed why he is one of the frontrunners (along with Ish Sesay of Fairfax) for GYFL Player of the Year as he began to light up the sky with completions.  Parker was 17/25 for 260 yards and 2 TD’s on the day.  On this drive, he used a succession of short passes to Deshaun Cannady and Tony Hansford that caused the defensive backs to come closer to the line of scrimmage.  A few plays later Parker went deep down the right sideline with a perfectly thrown bomb to a streaking Darez Diggs who caught the ball in stride.  Had it not been for the blazing speed of Troy Vincent Jr., Diggs would have certainly scored on the play.  Vincent pushed him out of bounds at the 9 yard line and DC was in scoring position.

After a couple of penalties, Parker struck again over the top of the defense with a pin point pass to Tony Hansford in the left corner of the end zone for an 18 yard touchdown.  It was the 2nd time during the game that Hansford, who is one of the speediest players in the GYFL, had beaten his man.  Parker missed him on a deep throw in the first quarter but hit him perfectly this time for the 18 yard score.  After a 2 point conversion by Cannady, DC led 8 – 7.  We were in for a ball game.

Hunter Ford brought the kickoff back 27 yards to give Loudoun County great field position.  Cole Herdman, who is the starting TE, but played quarterback today without the services of Hollister, completed a 20 yard pass to Melvin Holland to put Loudoun on the move, but his next pass was intercepted by Keith Myers Jr., who electrified the crowd with a 72 yard return for a touchdown.  Myers stepped right in front of the pass and used and burst of speed and array of cutbacks to get into the end zone.  After Diggs caught a Parker pass for the 2 point conversion, DC was ahead 16 – 7.  Loudoun was unable to convert on its’ next possession and Parker immediately went for the jugular.  Parker decided to go deep to one of his speedy receivers but he chose to pick on the wrong guy as Troy Vincent Jr., leaped high in the air to pick off a pass by Parker.

As the Loudoun defense celebrated the opportunity to close the gap before halftime, it was the DC defense that had the last laugh.  Herdman was picked off again, this time by Daijon Carson, who returned the pick 30 yards seconds before halftime.  DC was unable to score as Parker was sacked by Tucker Langmead right before the time ran out.  The halftime score was locked at 16 – 7.

DC took the opening kickoff and Parker went to work.  He hit Cannady on another short pass.  He found Devyn Cannon on consecutive catches to move the chains.  Just as Loudoun began to come up closer to the line of scrimmage to contest the short passes, Parker struck again over the top.  He found Darez Diggs on a deep post pattern down the middle of the field between the safeties and nobody was going to catch him.  Diggs sprinted the final 20 yards to cap off a beautiful 47 yard touchdown strike, putting DC up 22 – 7 early in the 3rd quarter.  The rest of the second half was pretty much a slug fest, with neither team giving up.

There was no more scoring, but every time it seemed as though Loudoun was gaining momentum, DC would get another interception with a long return that took the air out of Loudoun’s sails.  Keith Myers Jr., got a second pick and returned it 25 yards.  Then, Kenneth Holmes picked one off and brought it back 38 yards.  The four interceptions were just too much for Loudoun to overcome.  You have to wonder how the game could have gone had Hollister been under center throwing to Herdman, who is his favorite receiver.  Not only did they lose their quarterback, but they in effect lost their best tight end as well, who had to play quarterback.  We will see how they perform next week when they are at full strength.

Not to take anything away from DC though, they also played without Khari Williams, who may be their best all around player.  He is a dynamic RB/WR/KR/DB that gave Montgomery County coaches fits in week 1 and got High School coaches excited to hear that he has not committed to a school yet.

Defensive stalwarts for Loudoun were Tucker Langmead, who had 5 tackles and a blocked punt recovered for a touchdown.  Koosha Kassiri had a sack and a fumble recovery, while Troy Vincent Jr. had 4 tackles and an interception.  Caleb Trump and Uzoma Kpaduwa played well for the War Eagles.  On the DC side, Burke Davis led the team in tackles with 4 unassisted and a forced fumble.  Keith Myers Jr. was sensational with a forced fumble and 2 interceptions, one for a touchdown.  Carlos Atkinson had a sacked and applied pressure throughout the game, while Fahim Muhammed and Dereon Carr made plays all over the field.

The final score was DC 22, Loudoun County 7

Game #3

Montgomery County 8, Baltimore Metro 0

{flv}week-2-game-3{/flv}

The GYFL Game of the Week was expected be a nail biter and it was just that.  Although it wasn’t the track meet that we expected to see, it was a tough, hard fought defensive struggle that came down to a dual of wills as coach Andy Steffanelli and his staff found a way to slow down the potent running game of Baltimore.  Coach Ty Johnson’s Baltimore All Stars racked up 268 yards rushing in the opening game against Prince George’s County and the hometown Baltimore fans were looking forward to seeing them do it again at Woodlawn HS on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.  Montgomery County had different plans though as they limped into the game missing their top two running backs.  Both Robert Walker and Leo Ekwange were sidelined with injuries for the game and Baltimore was hoping to capitalize.

Both teams wanted to run the ball.  They both have great size and strength in their offensive line.  Baltimore likes to run behind Raymond Jackson, Anthony Coxall, Barry Goins, and Orlando “Little Zues Brown.  While Montgomery has Darrin Myers, Sam Madaras, Jamal Averette, and Logan Portes leading their ground attack.  Baltimore recovered an onside kick to start the game and tried the pound the ball in the first series, but were unable to maintain the drive and turned over on downs.  Montgomery took over and tried to run Perry Steffanelli and Kyle Snyder behind their big line.  They also failed to sustain their opening drive.

Baltimore’s next possession was somewhat successful for before a fumble was recovered by Kyle Snyder to stop the momentum.  Montgomery County could not capitalize on the fumble and was forced to punt.  Baltimore went back on the attack and was moving the ball on the ground before penalties and Kyle Snyders’ crushing tackles kept them in check.  Snyder made plays all over the field on Saturday and covered sideline to sideline.  Garvin Brooms got a big sack on the possession which forced a turnover on downs for Baltimore midway through the 2nd quarter.

Kolar Kuhns was picked off of the next possession by Jordan Adams which put them in great field position and inspired the crowd.  However, Brooms was too quick for Little Zues and beat him around the end for another big sack back at the Baltimore 5 yard line.  A great punt by Dalontae Jennings got Baltimore out of trouble as Jalen Tabor had a nice punt return for Montgomery.  They started the next possession on Baltimore’s side of the 50.  A nice completion from Kuhns to Roger Richardson had Montgomery on the move.  Tabor dropped a pass from Kuhns, but a few plays later he drew a pass interference penalty on Baltimore’s Justin Hawkins that gave Montgomery a chance to take the lead going into halftime if they could score with a few seconds remaining on the clock.  Kuhns rolled out to the left and found Ryan Perigard in the back of the end zone on a wonderful pass and catch, but Perigard couldn’t get his feet down in bounds and the clock ran out with the score 0 – 0 at the half.

Maurice Williams opened the half on a 56 yard kickoff return that looked like he could go all the way.  Jessie Frazier made a saving tackle, but Baltimore had the crowd going crazy and they were looking to take the lead.  Williams made a couple of big runs to get Baltimore inside the 10 yard line, and it appeared as though the offensive line of Baltimore was beginning to gain the advantage.  Montgomery stiffened up behind 2 good plays by Sam Madaras and Garvin Brooms, and Baltimore selected to go for it on fourth down instead of attempting a field goal.  The pass from Quante Cornish to Delontae Jennings was caught, but he was stopped 2 yards short of the end zone by Jessie Frazier and Jelani Williamson.

A big penalty on Baltimore gave Montgomery a first down when they were in a 4th down punting situation.  Montgomery was having success running with Perry Stefanelli, punting, and then playing good defense as they focused on changing the field position.  The compact running back was finding holes, setting up blocks, and exploding for first downs as Montgomery chewed up the clock in the 4th quarter.  Kyle Snyder threw a series of great blocks to give Stefanelli room to operate.  Montgomery County moved the ball down inside the 2 yard line and went for it on 4th down.  Instead of handing off to Stefanelli this time, they popped Snyder right up the middle, catching Baltimore off guard and he got into the end zone for the score.  The 2 point conversion made the game 8 – 0 with under minute to play.

Baltimore in desperation mode was able to move the ball all the way down the field with a 60 yard pass reception from Quante Cornish to Eddie Nelson III.  It was a great pass and catch as Nelson got behind Jalan Tabor on the reception.  On the next play, with no time outs, Cornish attempted a run, was tackled and time ran out on the Baltimore All Stars.

Kyle Snyder was the defensive star for Montgomery with 8 tackles.  Jemal Averette had 4 tackles and Jelani Williamson chipped in with 3.  Garvin Brooms had 2 pivotal sacks and applied pressure all game long on Baltimore.  The whole Montgomery defensive unit did a great job of containing the potent Baltimore running game.  On the defensive side for Baltimore, as expected Raymond Jackson was dominant with constant pressure and 4 tackles on the day.  Dalontae Jennings played with reckless abandon and had 5 tackles.  Aubrey Moffett had a big day on defense for Baltimore with 4 tackles and a sack, while Quay Marshall had a second great game with 4 tackles as well.

The final score was 8 – 0 Montgomery County over Baltimore Metro
