Week #6 Summary

Week #6 was a true thriller.  We took the show on the road to Riverdale Baptist School in Upper Marlboro and the weather was Grassroots style...... just gorgeous football weather.  It was a little overcast and there were some sprinkles, but for the most part it was great weather.  Bays Trays made their debut as our concessions partner and the food was absolutely delicious!!!  Funnel Cakes and Fried Fish were enjoyed by all.......  Oh and by the way, the football was pretty good too!

Game #1:  This was a Grassroots instant classic between the Hamilton Tigers JV and the Marlboro Mustangs JV.  Marlboro jumped on 13 - 0 in the first quarter on explosive plays.  Jason Mackall had a 40 yard TD run after a turnover on Hamilton's first play.  Tyrik Blount started the game off with a bang getting an interception on the games first pass, then catching a 35 TD pass up the right sideline.  Before the fams could get in there seats, the Mustangs were up by 2 scores.  Then the Tigers stopped turning the ball over and went to their vaunted ground game.  Jabriel "The G5 Jet" Johnson got some great blocks and went 55 yards for the first scoring run of the day for the Tigers, who came storming back to take the lead.  Mike Sumner threw 4 long TD passes on the day, with 3 going to Tamar Campbell, who is truly an elite receiver prospect as a 7th grader.  With the Mustangs down 27 - 25 with less than 10 seconds on the clock and at their own 45 yard line, Sumner put up the deep ball into double coverage with Quizzon Tarver and Johnson draped all over Campbell.  Tamar went up, came down with the ball and turned on the speed for the game winning TD as time expired.  What a game.  Marlboro 31 - Hamilton 27.

Game #2: It was a rough day for the Fatz Bulldogs in the JV "Battle of the Bulldogs."  Westlake's power running game was just too much for them.  The running game was unstoppable on the ground behind an offensive line lead by Kameron Adams, Trayvon Branch, Brandon Ream, Joseph Bearns and the big OL.  The DL was dominant behind Stohne Hill, Boopy Davis, Elijah Ogburn, and the rest of the Westlake crew.  Michael Prather, Nysheim Heatley, Michael Handy-Hall, and Eric Hampton all had big games on the ground.  Dominique Anthony ran the show to perfection in this lopsided victory.  Westlake 55, Fatz Bulldogs 0.

Game #3:  Our JV game of the week featured The undefeated Gorc Wildcats vs the MoHo Co Lions.  The game was much closer than the 19 - 0 score would indicate.  MoHo Co got strong games from QB Trace Campbell and Chris Clark, who connected on a number of short passes.  Matthew Lipp contributed as usual and Antione Littleton Jr. was huge on defense with an Int and some strong tackles, but the Gorc LB's would not allow him to do much on the ground.  Tre Wade and Ron Ron Robinson were tough for the Lions, but the Wildcats were too much.  Sam Sweeney had another stellar performance at QB using his legs and his arm.  Ryheem "Ounce for Ounce" Tull was a thorn in the Lions side all day on the ground.  Josh Dodd did not have a big day on receptions, but was strong on defense.  The LB's for Gorc are all standout and played like it Saturday.  Billy Wooden, Gerame Spraggins, William Oliver, and DeSean Spencer were all better than advertised.  Remember those names.  Ashton and Austin Allen, along with Adrian Hood turned in solid performances.  Gorc 19, MoHo Co 0.

Game #4: Hamilton Tigers Varsity vs Ft. Hunt Federals was a lot closer than expected.  Ft. Hunt got the scoring off to a bang with a 35 yard INT return for a TD by Deveon Walton.  The Tigers running game was stout behind the legs of Jamaine Jeter and Dalen Berry.  The score was 14 - 6 at halftime and we had a tough game in the works.  Ft. Hunt ran some traditional offense and were able to move the ball with Amir "Pound for Pound" Jordan and Walton, but they couldn't not maintain enough consistency to get it in the end zone.  Timeric Smith had to drive stopping INT's for Hamilton to help them close out the game.  The defense led by Taron Vincent and Jamal Shearin was dominant on the day for Hamilton.  Zack Monson and Jay Holzworth had great games on defense for the Federals but it was not enough on this day to get their first W.  Hamilton 27, Ft. Hunt 6.

Game #5: Westlake Varsity was coming off of a humiliating defeat in a non conference game against the MD Seahawks last weekend and they took their frustration out on the Fatz Bulldogs.  Nick Gage opened up the scoring by running back the first half kickoff and they never looked back.  DeJuan Ellis showed off his DB skills by picking off the first pass and returning it 50 yards for the 2nd TD of the day.  With 8 min in the first quarter, Westlake was already up 13 - 0.  Chaz Crawford had two punt returns for TD's and Ellis threw a bomb to Deonte Hill of over 50 yards to extend the lead.  Rashard Jackson and Jason Labbe scored on long runs for Westlake in this lopsided affair.  Westlake 51, Fatz 0.

Game #6: Our Grassroots Game of the week did not disappoint.  The Gorc Wildcats and MoHo Co Lions gave the crowd it's money's worth.  The Wildcat defense was truly lights out, sacking QB Doc Bonner 9 times on the night and not giving Moho Co time to utilize their weapons on offense.  Jeremy Mensah, Brandon Dumas, and Ephraim Moore were relentless on the MoHo Co offense with a number of sacks and pressures.  MoHo Co shut the Wildcats down on offense as well, and did not allow them very many first downs on the night.  The alternating QB duo of Richard Dion and Trent Jackson was not able to muster up much offense, but they did not need it.  The Gorc defense was swarming all over the Lions and turning defense into offense, scoring 3 times under the bright lights at Riverdale.  Dezuan Turner-Owens picked off a Doc Bonner pass and returned it 65 yards for the first score of the night in the 1st quarter.  In the 2nd quarter, his twin brother Dejour Turner-Owens scooped up a fumble and sprinted back 40 yards for the second score of the night.  Doc Bonner began to heat up with pop passes over the top of the blitzing LB's of Gorc and they began to move the chains and got on the board with a short TD pass to Cooper McGeehan to trim the score to 14 - 8 in the 3rd quarter.  A scary moment in the game was when Bonner went down with a foot injury and was out for the rest of the game.   Some kid named Kyle Fairbanks stepped into the bright lights with all the confidence in the world and captured the moment.  He began to move the ball with short pop passes, intermediate passes, and short runs.  Brandon Willis, Micah McNeil, and Spanky Dixon made plays on the ground and through the air to get them into scoring position late in the game.  With under 2 minutes the Lions were in the red zone threatening to score.  On 4th Down, Cowboy McCutcheon ran a draw play and carried defenders down to the 1 foot line, but he did not get in and they turned it over on downs with a little less than 2 minutes remaining.  The Lions held and Gorc took the safety, making the score 14 - 0.  The Lions began to move the ball deep into Wildcat territory with less than a minute.  Fairbanks it a Lion receiver over the middle, but the ball bounced off of his hands into the hands of Dezuan Turner-Owens, who picked if off and showed blazing speed as he scooted up the sideline and into the endzone for the 60 yard TD return to ice the game.  Wildcats 20; Lions 8.
