History of Team Maryland in the FBU National Championship Tournament

In order to gain respect nationally and turn the DMV into a Nationally respected Football HOTBED, we must take State All Star Teams and play against State All Star Teams from North Carolina, from Georgia, form Florida, from Louisiana, from Texas, etc.  We are off to an amazing start, but we still have work to do.

We must have a platform to compete against those teams and WE MUST WIN!  The platform must be a respected platform and when we participate in that platform, play against those state All Star Teams with the best that the DMV has to offer, we will begin to CHANGE EVERYTHING!!!  We have already started the process. As we change perception the colleges will Notice and MORE scholarship offers will come to the DMV when we become that Nationally respected Football Hotbed.

We won it all in 7th grade in 2012.  We won it again in 8th grade in 2016.  It was unbelievable.  But not enough!!!

Football University is the ONLY National Platform that provides an opportunity for us to change our perception. They own the US Army All American Game which has the top 4 and 5 Star HS athletes each year that have committed to the top Colleges.  College Programs follow the US Army Game and they Follow FBU because both properties are owned by the same parent company, All American Games (AAG).

AAG created FBU to find the next group of elite middle school athletes that will one day have a chance to play in the US Army Game.  The connection between FBU and Major Colleges is purely undeniable.  FBU is critical to our overall objective, which is to maximize our athletes chances to compete for a college scholarship.  If you are not interested in playing college football, this is probably NOT the tournament for you and there are other opportunities that we can refer you to.

If you are interested in College, you will see our average number of scholarship offers increase each and every year.  This is the mission that we are on at Grassroots and we are succeeding.  Check out the Grassroots Track Record if you need more proof. Click Here to see the details.

No single event or showcase is more important to the machine than the FBU National Championship Tournament.

We have some of the very best in the business coming to train and evaluate the athlete's. Parents whether you join Team Maryland as we prepare to defend our title as National Champs or not this is one you DON'T want to miss! Here is why:

2018 Instructors

If you are not convinced yet and still need even more information to make your decision, here is more.....

FBU's National Championship Tournament at the 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade division is like the Little League World Series of youth football. NOTHING CAN COMPARE to it.  In 2012, our 7th Graders followed my lead and obliterated Central Virginia, Eastern Carolina, Chicago, Massachusetts, South Florida, and NE Louisiana on the way to the 7th Grade National Championship in 2012.  It was not about winning a ring.  It was about revolutionizing a State guys and earning National Respect, which in turn will increase scholarship offers for this region.

In 2016, our 8th Graders kicked the door in by obliterating the competition and winning 5 games in a row en route to a 41 to 14 thrashing of Team Seattle in the National Championship Game and we finished the mission.  One Championship at 7th Grade and one at 8th Grade in 4 years is pretty special.  We  have had more Final Four Teams than any region in the history of the FBU National Championship, but it is NOT enough!!!

That is how serious this is for us at Grassroots.  If we are going to be successful in changing the entire paradigm and perception about our region as a football power, which will in turn, manifest itself with more scholarship offers to our region, your child will have a better chance at earning one when he graduates.  You need for this to happen and we are the ones to make it happen.  For the last 5 years we put formidable teams together at all 3 age groups.  We are expecting to come back with National Championships at 7th and 8th Grade this year.

The cool thing is that the GYFL League has 3 options for you to consider that are all tied to and run by GYFL organizations.  You will begin to see promos for Team Metro Maryland and Team Northern Virginia soon.  But, this promo is for Team Maryland, the reigning National Champions.

As a region, when we begin to dominate the FBU Tournament at every level and win Championships in front of 200,000 viewers on the internet, along with the powerful marketing and promotion campaign of FBU, college coaches will look at us differently all over the country.  High School football coaches from all over will understand that the youth football leagues in the DMV are putting out monsters that are a force to be reckoned with.  The game will continue to change!!!

As more an more of them matriculate to college and dominate, you will see our average number of scholarship offers increase each and every year.  This is the mission that we are on at Grassroots and we are succeeding.  Check out the Grassroots Track Record if you need more proof. Team MD Goes to the State House

Written by

In the 8 years since Grassroots was founded, we have done some amazing things.  We have blessed a lot of kids and parents.  We have broken ground in many areas, but NEVER, have we done anything like what we did on Monday Feb 27th, 2017.  Pictured above you see members of the 2016 8th Grade Team Maryland National Championship Team.  Four of the best GYFL alums ever were on hand to enjoy the festivities and be honored as well.  Kasim Hill, Anthony McFarland, Marcus Minor, and Cam Spence were all honored. They are the anchors of the legendary 2017 U of Maryland Recruiting Class.

During that glorious evening, the Maryland Senate honored the National Champions with the presentation of a Senate Proclamation in the Senate Chamber during the Monday 2/27 session. TThe University of Maryland 2017 Commits took center stage and were honored separately first, then the National Champs took over.

The Legislature went in at 8pm on Monday night so the boys were be honored approximately 8:15pm after the session actually began. This is a night that will change the lives of these 40 young men and their families. There was a reception for the Team and family members prior to the start of the session in the Miller Senate Office Building. The boys and coaches will actually walked onto the Senate floor to be honored.

Senator Douglass J.J. Peters and Senate President Miller orchestrated the event and were in attendance, along with Senators and Delegates from all over the Great State of Maryland. Successful CEO's from the Chamber of Commerce will be on hand to greet the players, parents, shake hands and give out business cards.  Our babies will had a chance to meet some of the people they will hopefully be working for and with when their playing days are over.

President of the Senate Mike Miller      UMD Head Coach DJ Durkin         Barry Gosset with Ms. McFarland

Head Coach DJ Durkin and members of the U of Maryland Coaching Staff were present along with Head Coach Damon Wilson of Bowie State University. Members of the Board of Regents from the University of Maryland were present.  Mr. Barry Gossett (The U of Maryland Gossett Field House is named after him).  Gary Attman, the owner of Future Care was on hand to bless our kids.

U of Maryland incoming Freshman on the Senate Floor.

The Night was simply extraordinary and one we will never forget.  Ladies and Gentlemen, This is Grassroots. CLICK HERE to see our 7 Year Track Record, which clearly illustrates the Grassroots Difference.

If you want to be at next years ceremony, the first step is here.  CLICK HERE to Learn more about how we do what we do.

  • This is the 1st Official Tryout for Team Northern VA.  Northern Va coaches will be leading the drills and running the show.
  • So in essence we have 3 teams from the DMV that will compete in this prestigious tournament.  This means there are more than enough opportunities for kids with the talent to play in this tournament.
    • During Tournament time, we will all compete against one another, but prior to that we will compete with one another to find the best of the best and place them on the teams that are the best fit for them.
    • There will be up to 40 roster spots per team, and each region has 3 Teams (6th, 7th, and 8th Grade.  That is up to 120 roster spots per region.
    • There will be 3 regions (Maryland, Metro Maryland, & Nova), for a total of 360 total roster spots.
  • Participants from the entire DMV are welcome! (Maryland, DC, Northern Va, and Delaware are all welcome).  For states bordering MD and Virginia, if you don't have an FBU Team in your area, you may be eligible to play for one of our teams.  It is all a function of the distance from your home to the closest home base for our teams.
    • Home Base for Maryland and Metro Maryland is Upper Marlboro, MD
    • Home Base for Northern VA is Alexandria, VA
    • So if you are from out of state please go to www.FBUNC.com and find the regional teams that are closest to you. Calculate the distances and you will know what regional team you are eligible.
    • For example, Delaware and regions of Pennsylvania are closer to Upper Marlboro than the next closest region and you would be eligible for FBU Maryland or Metro Maryland. 2015 FBU Team MD Tryout

2015 FBU Team Maryland National Championship Tournament Team Tryout

PLEASE WERE YOUR OFFICIAL YOUTH CLUB GAME JERSEY FOR IDENTIFICATION PURPOSES

CLICK HERE to download a copy of the liability waiver that you will need to fill out.  Saves time at the registration table!!!!!!

In order to gain respect nationally, we must take State All Star Teams and play against State All Star Teams from North Carolina, from Georgia, form Florida, from Louisiana, from Texas, etc.  We must have a platform to compete against those teams and WE MUST WIN!  The platform must be a respected platform and we can participate in that platform, play against those state All Star Teams with the best that the DMV has to offer, we will begin to CHANGE EVERYTHING!!! We have already started the process.

Football University is the ONLY National Platform that provides an opportunity for us to change our perception.  Their 64 State Team National Championship Tournament at the 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade division is he Little League World Series of youth football.  NOTHING CAN COMPARE to it.  Our 7th Graders followed my lead and obliterated Central Virginia, Eastern Carolina, Chicago, Massachusetts, South Florida, and NE Louisiana on the way to the 7th Grade National Championship in 2012.  It was not about winning a ring.  It was about revolutionizing a State guys.

That is how serious this is for me.  If we are going to be successful in changing the entire paradigm and perception about our region as a football power, which will in turn, manifest itself with more scholarship offers to our region, your child will have a better chance at earning one when he graduates.  You need for this to happen and we are the ones to make it happen.  For the last 3 years we put formidable teams together at all 3 age groups.

When we begin to dominate the FBU Tournament at every level and win Championships in front of 200,000 viewers on the internet, along with the powerful marketing and promotion campaign of FBU, people will look at us differently all over the country.  High School football coaches from all over will understand that the youth football leagues in the DMV are putting out monsters that are a force to be reckoned with.  As we create and develop better and more focused football players through our Spring and Fall programs our High School football teams will get stronger and stronger because of us sending them better players.  When they go out of town to Ohio, Florida, and Texas to play non-conference games and begin to dominate those teams with players that we groomed, it will shock the country and add to the legend.  That is when the process will officially be complete and we will have changed the game.

I don't know how long the process will take, but I plan on doing this until the day that I die, so it doesn't matter how long it takes.  All that matters is that you guys understand how serious this is and find a way to get to one of our tryouts.

If you don't believe in the power of this movement and the power of Grassroots and FBU, all you have to do is follow the success of our local teams as they take on the top teams in the country.  Eastern Christian Academy just dominated a powerful Paramus New Jersey team that is always highly ranked.  Gilman played St. Edwards to a 14 -13 thriller after being blown out last year.  DeMatha beat two of the elite team from the great state of Florida in the last 2 weeks.  The blew out the powerhouse Miami Central on ESPN for the whole world to see and the next week they went into Florida and beat the always lethal American Heritage.  St. Johns beat a Florida team called Atlantic, and other teams from the area have been impressive in out of state games.  All of these teams feature Grassroots alums who have played in the FBU National Championship Tournament and been battle tested against National Competition.

They went to HS ready to dominate and the proof is in the pudding.  If you think you are ready for this level of football, click on the link below.

FBU Banquet, Signing/Announcement Day

Written by

FBU Team Banquet and HS Signing/Announcement Day
We are about one of the most exciting events in the History of Grassroots!!!!! On March 1st, we plan to change the game. We are going to have a fantastic Banquet at the CDI Facility in Waldorf from 2pm - 5pm.  It will be to honor your accomplishments and run through the Tournament.  Plenty of food and drink, awards and tons of fun!

The 1st Annual 8th Grade HS Signing/Announcement Day is scheduled for Saturday March 1st and we MUST see you guys in the building.  From 5pm - 6pm we will host the First 8th Grade Signing Day/Announcement event covered by the Washington Post.  We will do it like the big boys do it on College Signing Day.  We are evolving the title to Announcement Day because although the process seems and feels very similar to the High School to College Process, there are technically no Letters of Intent to sign.  The kids will just be announcing the schools that they will be attending and will don the hats of that school if they are able to aqcuire them.

Every player on the FBU team (including selected invited guests who were not on the team) that knows what HS he is going to will be recognized, step up and place his HS hat on is head.  The starters will be sitting at tables similar to how the HS kids do.  Coach Byrd will give a brief bio of the kid and they young man will announce his HS decision.

This is not mandatory by any means, as some of the kids may not have made up their minds at that time.  Some of them may still be awaiting acceptance letters and may not be ready to announce.  But for those that are, we want to honor them.

Our first ever Grassroots Reunion Party has been postponed to March 29th to give us more time to prepare.  We want to make the reunion a stand alone event that will never be forgotten.  Details will be forthcoming for the Alumni reunion, but make plans to attend the Banquet.

We encourage High School Coaches to attend.  All Head Coaches will receive free admission.

Who: FBU 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Teams, coaches and families
When: Saturday March 1st
Where: CDI Training Facility 33 Industrial Park Dr. Waldorf MD 20602
Time: 2pm - 6pm

We need those of you who are attending to purchase your tickets immediately.  Click HERE TO PURCHASE TICKETS!!!!

2013 Eastbay All American Game

Written by

Congratulations to all of our Grassroots Eastbay Youth All Americans!

For the past three years, the nation’s top 7th and 8th graders have joined in the activities of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl to compete in the Eastbay Youth All-American Bowl. The 9th Grade International Game featuring the Team USA U-15 game was played this year.

The Eastbay Youth All American Bowl already has become the most important youth football all-star event in the country, and it was recently the focus of the nationally-syndicated sports show, “Sports Stars of Tomorrow.” Many of the top players in the Eastbay Youth All-American Bowl have already received college interest and national attention from media outlets such as USA Today, Sports Illustrated, the New York Times, the Seattle Times and the Los Angeles Times.

We had a number Grassroots Alums participate in the 2013 Games.  In the 7th Grade game, QB Dujuan Ellis of the Westlake Bulldogs was selected to play in the game but chose to stick with his 7th Grade Team Maryland All Star team and led them to the National Championship.

8th Grade RB Anthony McFarland, the speedster from White Oak was selected to play in the 8th Grade game, but was unable to attend.  8th Grade OL/DL Camaron Spence from the Arundel Admirals was dominant in the 8th Grade game.

In the 9th Grade (15 U) game we had 3 alums who were dominant in the game.  Steven Smothers (Franklin HS) was fantastic from his WR position.  RB Lorenzo "Lo Lo" Harrison (DeMatha) was electrifying on the ground, while DE and Eastbay Player of the Year Shane Simmons wrecked havoc on the offense throughout the game.

Some notable former Eastbay Youth All-Americans include Christian McCaffrey, son of former Denver Bronco Ed McCaffrey; Ray Lewis, Jr., son of the NFL’s Ray Lewis; 2013 Rivals top recruit Tyrone Swoopes, and the record breaking rushing performance by 2014 running back Sony Michel.

In January 2012, the Eastbay Youth All-American Bowl consisted of four games: an East vs. West 7th grade game; East vs. West 8th grade game; East vs. West no-weight limit 8th grade game; and the USA vs. Canada Bowl. The games are played in the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, the same field that the U.S. Army All-Americans play on one day before. The Youth Bowls are webcasted live on www.footballuniversity.org and www.allamericangames.tv.

Prior to gameday, the Eastbay Youth All-Americans' week consists of practices, a skills competition, and break-out sessions with Hall of Famers, as well as current and former NFL stars and celebrities such as legendary high school football coach Herman Boone. The Youth All-Americans also join the high school U.S. Army All-Americans for the Kickoff Party and are honored during the playing of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Several thousand youth all-stars are nominated each year for this elite honor. Athletes have to fill out a nomination form and submit a highlight tape on Eastbay.com. The selection committee, which consists of Football University’s regional directors and scouts, work year-round with hundreds of local youth football coaches and commissioners who help identify top athletes. To learn more about how to nominate an athlete go to http://www.eastbay.com/eastbayyouthallamericanbowl/.
