Tailgating:

Tailgating is NOT allowed by the facilities that we rent.  There can be NO grills, either gas or charcoal in the parking lot.  We will have concessions available and they will be fabulous.

We have gotten a few responses from people with dietary issues that can't eat regular food and we have granted permission to a couple of people on individual cases.  If you have not been granted specific permission by me, please do not attempt to bring coolers into the stadium.  The only exceptions will be coolers used for teams.

The following guidelines will be in place at all GYFL sanctioned games:

  • There will be a $5.00 per person entrance fee (Except Thursday Night Games at High School Stadiums where the fee will be $3.00)
  • On Thursday Nights at recreation fields we are not allowed to charge, so there is no fee. Donations are always welcome to help us cover expenses.
  • Children 5 years of age and under will be admitted free of charge.
  • Wristbands or stamps will be issued during games when a fee is charged, which will allow everyone to regain entry back into the games, should you need to depart the game for any reason.
  • Different colored wristbands will allow different levels of access.  Field access is one color.  Stadium access will be another color.  You will not be allowed on the field or track without the appropriate color wristband.
  • No outside food of any kind will be permitted inside of the GYFL games, unless otherwise instructed.  Check website regularly.
  • NO SUNFLOWER SEEDS are allowed on any field turf stadiums.
  • Coolers will not be permitted into GYFL games under any circumstances unless you have received prior authorization from GYFL Management Staff. **Exceptions to this guideline will be made in regards to infant formula, emergency kits, etc. – again prior authorization should be obtained before entry into the games will be given**
  • All bags are subject to be searched by security prior to entry and security will be located at each gate.
  • No smoking is allowed on High School Facility parking lots or common areas.
  • No weapons of any kind are permitted.
  • High School grounds are not to be used as public restrooms!!!  Patrons must use bathrooms or Porta Johns.
  • Schedule is Subject to Change by GYFL.

Note: We are raising the bar again and bringing back season 2 of Thursday Night Lights this year at our Varsity level.  On specific weeks, we will take our best Varsity Showcase Game of the week and play it Thursdays at 7:30pm under the lights so all the HS Coaches, scouts, and even local college coaches can come see the Future of DMV football.

Fans will also be able to see the best that we have to offer on Thursday and not have to miss their own sons games, HS, or College games on Saturday.  The season opener will be spectacular on Thursday September 7th, where we will debut the 2017 Varsity Season with a rematch of the 2016 Championship Game between the Defending Champion Maryland Heat vs the renamed and revamped Bowie One, who went undefeated in last years regular season.  We will play games at the beautiful White Marsh Field in Bowie, Lamond Riggs Recreation Center in NE Washington, and other top flight lighted and turfed facilities across the DMV.

Stay tuned to the site, FB, and Twitter for any changes and/or.  Whether we play on Thursdays or Saturdays, our Varsity Showcase game will be Live Streamed by SEN Television and will be covered like Pre-Season HS Football Games shown on ESPN.  Expect sideline reporting and a desk Pre-Game, Halftime, and Post Game Show.

We will roll out all the bells and whistles for our showcase games, which are listed in the schedule.

Final Note:  The Bowie Program competes in 2 Leagues this Fall.  They compete in the GYFL as Bowie One and in the Mid Maryland Youth Football League as the Bowie Bulldogs.  You will notice that all of their GYFL Games are either Thursday Night or Sunday.  This is done not as favoritism for them, but to give their bodies a chance tor rest so they can fulfill the commitment to their Mid Maryland Schedule on Saturdays.

Ladies and Gentlemen:
There is a storm brewing....... Can you feel it? I have told people that this will be the most exciting Fall Season in GYFL history, but to be honest it has NEVER just been about GYFL for me. I have been searching high and low to find a way to reach across the aisle and mend fences with the Traditional Youth Community.
I have a passion for ALL kids and GYFL is only designed to service a small percentage. It is tied to Post-Season All Star Opportunities like the FBU National Championship Tournament, the Under Armour 8th Grade All American Game, the USA Football International Bowls, the V7 Elite Playmakers All American Game, the Mid Atlantic Youth Crab Bowl and the Mid Atlantic Youth Capital Bowl. We LOVE all of those opportunities...... But they are focused on an All Star/Select Format, NOT on TRADITIONAL TEAM FOOTBALL.
We realize that has created some challenges and even animosity with those that are committed to the Traditional Youth Format where teams stay TOGETHER from the beginning until the end of the season. Those programs that have committed to the Elite level Traditional National Leagues like AYF, Pop Warner, UYFL, AAU and the other great National Leagues that offer National Championship Tournaments need for their teams to STAY TOGETHER. Our model has contributed to conflict with those orgs who play in those formats and want to keep their teams together to win a TEAM NATIONAL Championship.
We Get it......
That is not our lane...... We are NOT subject matter experts in those lanes, nor do we have a desire to be. Those Leagues have been doing a good job. We do what we do and they do what they do. But for the best interest of the kids, is it possible to work together?....... I think so!!!! How can we possibly work together you ask? Well..... let me share one possible way........ There are many many youth teams that are NOT a part of the traditional National Championship format and have been looking for something new, special, different and extraordinary to end their seasons off with AS A TEAM, and not as individual All Star Competition. In addition, a number of the traditional orgs that play in the traditional National Leagues, enjoy the leagues for the Fall Season, but have been searching for an even different level of competition in the post season that they can participate in AS A TEAM, and not as individual All Star competition.
Ladies and Gentlemen, a few of those organizations have fallen into either one of those categories, and they are about to get exposed to an opportunity of a lifetime!!!!!! And a way for us to work together. Allow me to introduce you to the Launch of the 2017 Youth National Championship Tournament presented by Battle Sports!!!!!!!
This is NOT a GYFL event. This is NOT ALL STAR Format. However, we are fortunate enough to be asked to help step in and market/promote it. You wouldn't think it would make sense for us to promote and support something that is not in our lane, but those that think that just don't know who we really are. We will support ANYTHING that there is a market for, that is professionally run and that kids, coaches, and parents can benefit from. Our All Star model has taken off. We have more than enough kids to do what we do in the post season. This is an opportunity for coaches and kids that believe in a different model to have the same type of next level, National Exposure that the GYFL All Stars Get, only in a Traditional Team Format.
This event is unlike anything I have ever seen before, and I am blessed that I was asked to be affiliated with it and to promote it. It is going to take you guys that run traditional organizations and coach individual teams to do some research to understand the impact.
I am including some links for you to review.
I am including some videos for you to review.
I am including a Press Release.
You will have all the information that you need to make an informed decision as to whether you want to come out and support this revolutionary opportunity that will be a yearly event. We hope that you will. It is not for everybody. Generation Nexxt and Battle Sports were looking for some of the Best of the Best traditional youth teams at the 8U - 14U level. I think they have hit their mark in the Mid Atlantic Region for year one and we are happy to have been able to play such a significant role in such a short period of time.
"The Youth National Championship is made up of 8 Conferences around the country and will INVITE the top teams in each conference to play in a Pre-Season Playoff, a Conference Playoff and ultimately a National Championship Game. Pre-Season Games will be played in August. Conference Playoffs will be played on Thanksgiving Weekend. The National Championship will be played in Southeast Florida from December 11th to December 16th."
"The Pre Season Playoffs are meant to provide top teams the opportunity to gauge their ability to compete at the highest level and prepare for the season. Generation Nexxt will continue providing national and conference rankings over the season. Playing in the Pre-Season Kickoff is the best way for teams to gain visibility and compete for conference and national rankings."
Folks there it is....... We represent the Mid Atlantic Conference and we thank those of you that answered the call that we put out last week. The matchups are going to be inane as you can already see.
For those of you that don't know about Generation Nexxt and Battle Sports yet, you must get caught up to speed and I am providing series of links below for you to study. Some of the top youth organizations in the country have committed to the Pre-Season Kickoff and have already played (as you can see from the video links). Teams such as: I.E. Lauderdale Hurricanes (South Fla); Atlanta Ducks (ATL); Yellow Jackets United (Texas); Maryland Seahawks (DMV); Maryland Heat (DMV); Metro VA Raiders (DMV), and Many Many More from across the country.

No photos to share, no rings to flash.....

No nice uniforms to dangle. No Nothing.

Just me and a dream........

I don't really know why they believed in me or the Dream. I didn't know most of them. A few played in the Spring GYFL, but not most.

Maryland High School Crab Bowl powered by Under Armour

Grassroots is proud to be an official partner of The Maryland Crab Bowl, Powered by Under Armour.  This is Maryland's only statewide High School football all star game. The game will feature the best Senior all stars from public and private schools in the state of Maryland. CLICK THIS LINK to learn more about the HS Game.

We could NOT be more excited to present to you the 10th Anniversary of the Maryland HS Crab Bowl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Game will consist of 90 players split on 2 different regional teams. The Washington regional team will consist of players from Montgomery County, Prince George's County, Anne Arundel County, Calvert County, St.Mary's County, and Charles County.  The Baltimore regional teams will consist of players from Howard County, Baltimore County, Baltimore City. Frederick County, Washington County, Allegheny County, Cecil County, Harford County, Carroll County, Garrett County, and the Eastern Shore.

(Team Washington Area in Black)                                        (Team Baltimore Area in White)

The Maryland Crab Bowl
has alumni that include Tavon Austin (WVU/ St. Louis Rams), Jelani Jenkins (Florida, Miami Dolphins), Kyle Fuller (Va Tech, Chicago Bears), Ego Ferguson (LSU, Chicago Bears), 2017 NFL 5th Round Draft Pick Marquel Lee (Wake Forest, Oakland Raiders), several other NFL players, and over 450 college football players. Rivals, Scout and 247 Sports consider the Crab Bowl the top in-state all-star game in the country.

We are also excited about this partnership because it will allow our GYFL alums to have an opportunity to play in an elite level HS All Star Game. Of course we are locked in heavy with the Under Armour All American HS Game, the US Army All American Game, and the USA Football North American Championship Game.  But, we understand that only a small percentage of our alums will be invited to those exclusive Nationally televised games.  The Crab Bowl allows for the masses of our HS alums to play in a next level game and get maximum exposure during the peak recruiting period for colleges.

High School Alums had the opportunity to try out of for the HS game by attending one of the Crab Bowl Evaluation Camps in July of 2017.  You guys don't want to miss out on the Crab Bowl Experience.

This is all brought to you by Tony Kennedy and Lamar Smith of the Mid Atlantic Sports Foundation.  To learn more about what they do and offer visit www.midatlanticsportsfoudation.org.

Note:  There will be other regions contacted about entering teams in the event that one or more of our regions may not be able to field, or meet each of our requirement deadlines.  Those names have not been included on this page to avoid confusion, but there is a chance that a 9th team could play the 8th team in a "Play In" game, for example.

We want to create more opportunities for 5th Graders so each 6th grade team will have the option to reserve up to 10 spots on their rosters for 5th graders.  So 5th graders get an early jump on the radar screen by attending the Burning Sands and Crab Bowl Tournament.  If you have a son interested in this amazing opportunity in ANY of the above regions contact the Team Director at the contact number listed for tryout information.

(Team Tidewater 7th Grade in 2015)                                        (Team Pennsylvania 6th Graders in 2015)

We are very excited to build the Youth Crab Bowl to the same level as the High School game.  What we love so much about the Crab Bowl is the venues where the games will be played.  The opening weekend will be December 9th and 10th.  We are currently securing elite HS venues for the Quarterfinals.  They will be played at state of the art facilities.

We will be able to play 12 games between two HS venues on the December 9th.  The 6 teams that lose the quarterfinal games will play the consolation games at those same 2 HS on Sunday 10th (3 games at one and 3 at the other).  The 6 teams that advance to the Semi Finals will play indoors at the new state of the art indoor turn at Cole Field House on Saturday Dec 16th.  Those that advance to the finals will play prior to the HS Crab Bowl game on Sunday Dec 17th at Bowie State University. The venues for the entire tournament will be breathtaking.

As much as we enjoy the travel of FBU, very few if any of the local high school coaches are going to be traveling with us.  This is a great opportunity for players who are good, but may not be deep on the radar yet, to really get some good exposure in the heart of the recruiting season.  While Team Maryland and Team Metro Maryland are competing Nationally in the prestigious FBU National Championship Tournament, the rest of the DMV will be competing locally for Mid Atlantic Regional Supremacy against some of the best teams in the Mid Atlantic region in front of ALL of the top HS Coaches in the DMV.

The youth players From DC, MD, Northern Va, Pennsylvania, and Delaware will have an opportunity to audition for the Crab Bowl in 4 different ways:
  • Playing in the GYFL Spring League

In the Fall of 2017, we will unveil latest version of The Grassroots Youth Football League. This will be our 5th year playing Fall Football. We started in the Spring of 2010 and after 4 years of exclusive Spring Football, the demand of our organizations was so significant that we had to create a boutique or "niche" league exclusively for those coaches and athletes who had become addicted to the "Select/All Star" format and wanted us to move into the Fall.

We had spoiled our partners in the Spring with the Grassroots Style of Football, so we answered the call and launched the first Fall GYFL League in 2013 with only 4 Organizations.  After a successful year two in 2014, we expanded with other programs that fit our profile.  We will continue to expand as needed in future years.  So to all of the youth clubs reading this, we are not in competition with you.  We serve a niche population of student athletes.  We would love to join forces with you in the future.  Contact us if you are interested in joining us at some point at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

For now, we are excited about what we are about to do in year 5.  There has never been a league quite like this in the history of the DMV.  We are not better or worse than any league.  We are different and serve a different profile of player.  This league is attractive to the truly elite athletes that love intense competition, and dream about being US Army All Americans, Under Armour All Americans, or representing their country in the USA Football North American Championship one day at the conclusion of their HS careers.

The kids and parents that believe they have what it takes to be a 6th Grade Crab Bowl All Star, a 7th Grade Team USA Football All Star, an 8th Grade Under Armour All American, or a 9th Grade FBU All American.  The kids that want to play for an FBU National Championship at 6th, 7th, or 8th Grade are the ones that GYFL was designed for.  If those are some of the dreams that your kids have, then Grassroots is the ONLY place to be.

We will only touch a small percentage of the elite talent in the region and will not impact the majority of football leagues that cater to the masses of football players. We only have 3 divisions (Frosh, JV, Varsity), with a max of 8 clubs in each division. We will not have any more than 30 players per team, which means that with 8 clubs the maximum number of kids we will have in any division will be 240.

If you are a parent or athlete and are interested in learning more about the GYFL Fall League, the first thing you need to do is PRE-REGISTER by CLICKING HERE NOW.

  • Pennsylvania Pride (Harrisburg, PA)
  • TSA Blitz Select (Baltimore City, MD)

League Structure (Age Cutoffs):

  • Frosh League: Primarily 6th Graders & Elite 5th Graders (May not turn 13 before August 1st)
  • JV League: Primarily 7th Graders & Elite 6th Graders (May not turn 14 before August 1st)
  • Varsity League: Primarily 8th Graders & Elite 7th Graders (May not turn 15 before August 1st)

Notes and Application Guidelines:

  • The age cutoffs are exceptions, not the rule.
  • We traditionally have 6th Graders in Frosh, 7th Graders in JV, and 8th Graders in Varsity.
  • But the age cutoffs have been established for those exceptions.
  • The #1 prerequisite to league positioning is the athletes Ability Level.
  • We WANT them to improve and kids don't improve by playing down when they can play their age/grade.
  • So we evaluate the birthday when evaluating the exceptions, but don't use that exclusively, and it is not the 1st cut.
  • Practical Example to apply to all Division Decisions:
    • Start with grade and then let's begin to evaluate.  For example let's look at a Generic 7th Grader.
    • Initial Evaluation:
      • Is he big enough to play Junior Varsity and compete?
      • Is he skilled enough to play Junior Varsity and compete?  He could be big but not very good.
      • If he is a 7th Grader and is big enough and skilled enough to compete, he will play JV regardless of age.
    • But what if he is a freak and would simply dominate JV and could compete at Varsity?
      • We play him up so he can improve, regardless of his age.
    • What if he is in the 7th Grade but is NOT big enough or skilled enough to compete at JV?
      • That is when we look at his age.  If he does not turn 13 before August 1st, he is age eligible for Frosh.
      • He is one that the competition committee would sign off on for Frosh Eligibility.
    • We would not just sign off on him playing Frosh just because he is age eligible.
    • That does NOT help him develop to his full potential as a football player.
    • It may stack the team and help them win on a technicality, but it is not good for the athlete or the league.
  • This is a practical example of why the rules were developed this way.

New Plans and Goals for 2017!!!!

We had the most amazing year in 2016. People want to know if we can even come close to replicating what we did.  If we can secure the best of the best talent from the DMV area, we are confident that we can.  But we need YOU to get this done!!!! Calling All Ballers.......

There are still roster spots available on our member organizations.  If  you are interested in joining the most elite league in the DMV you must do two things:

  1. Fill out the MANDATORY Pre-Registration List by CLICKING HERE
  2. Reach out to the regional Contact below that you are interested in (Listed Below):

On the heels of a 2016 FBU 8th Grade National Championship Win for Team Maryland, combined with the selection of 10 FBU 8th Grade All Americans, the GYFL is Nationally Hot right now.

WE ARE......Officially Smoking!  Click Here to see Highlights of the FBU 8th Grade National Championship Game.  For Highlights of the FBU 8th Grade All American Game, this is the link to click.

Did I forget to mention we produced the FBU National 8th Grade Player of the Year Antwain Littleton, who already secured an offer from Syracuse? Click Here to see his Under The Radar Spotlight Video.

What about the fact that A11 Stars Bowl MVP and FBU 8th Grade National Champion Garry Rosemond Jr. picked up his first of many offers from Central Florida already?  Garry was one of 14 GYFL 8 Graders were selected to the A11 Stars Bowl powered by Under Armour.

Yes, we did that.

GYFL produced the winning Head Coach of the FBU 8th Grade All American Game (Terrence Byrd), as well as both the Offensive (Zion Larkins Click Here for Zion's Highlight Video) and Defensive MVP's (Gregory Penn III) of the prestigious event at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

The National Champs even got to go the the Maryland State House and meet all of the State Senators, while receiving a Proclamation from the State. In addition, our league produced 8 FBU Freshman All Americans (GYFL Alums). It is hard to imagine having a better year for a league, and kids getting the type of exposure that can change destinies like we did in 2016.

We are literally on fire and arguably the hottest Youth League in the Country! Can we come close to matching that in the Fall of 2017?  Most people believe it is not possible...... Are we insane?  What more could we possibly expect or want?  Well........ We expect and want EVERYTHING and we will go get it in 2017. We hope you come with us.  We plan to do even better in 2017!!!

The success of 2016 brought a number of next level opportunities that we never imagined would come our way and allow us to outdo what we did last year. But they did come.

#1. FBU Gave us 3 National Championship Teams for the Tournament. Team Maryland, Team Maryland Metro and Team Virginia are now run by all GYFL Organizations!!!  The core kids for those teams will be selected from the 2017 Fall GYFL League, as well as the FBU All Americans from the DMV.  FBU NC and All American Games will take place in sunny Naples, Florida the week before Christmas.

Check the FBU Box...

#2. Under Armour witnessed the unbridled success of the GYFL and put us on the selection committee for the 2018 UA Next 8th Grade All American game.  Not only have they taken full control of their game, but they have entrusted GYFL to help select the players from across the country!!!

Of course we believe the best kids in the DMV play in the GYFL. So we will start inside the league to find the best of the best from this area. If they are not already in they league they would be wise to join asap.  Under Armour All American Game takes place in Orlando, Florida immediately following the HS Game at the Citrus Bowl during the first week in January.

Check the Under Armour Box.....

#3. USA Football watched us closely and asked for us to partner with them on selections for their International Bowls for U14 (7th Grade) through U16 (9th Grade).  The games take place in Dallas TX at Jerry World on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's birthday weekend, which is the 3rd week of January 2018!  Of course the core of those selected will be the best of the best from the Fall 2017 GYFL League.

Check the USA Football Box...

#4. Did I forget to mention the Crab Bowl 10th Anniversary is this December and Under Armour is taking their support to another level?  The Mid Atlantic regions top Youth All Star Game goes on steroids with 8 regional teams including many of the best kids from the Fall GYFL Season and managed primarily by GYFL Organizations.

Semi Finals to be held in the brand new University of Maryland Indoor Turf Field at Cole Field House!!!!

Check the Crab Bowl Box...

#5. The Mid Atlantic Sports Foundation unveils the first ever High School Capitol Bowl at Georgetown University to give the HS All Stars from DC and Nova the same exposure the Crab Bowl kids get.  You KNOW we had to do a youth tournament and what league do you think many of the kids will be scouted from? You guessed it.

Check the Capital Bowl Box...

Summary:

GYFL has the ammunition to do the unthinkable, which is to outdo what we did in 2016. With just the 5 opportunities listed above (There are more!), we plan to blow the doors off of 2016.

That is all for now.  I have laid it out and explained it the best way I know how.  I am always accused of being long winded.  I just love these kids so much and I want you parents to be informed about the "Matrix" that is big time football.  There is so much that you don't know and my job is to share the information with you.  It is up to you to do your research and make the decision on what you want for your son's.

Research requires reading, patience, and understanding.  It can't be successfully done in 180 characters.  You will never be able to say that Coach Mike didn't try to tell you though.  The ball is in your court now.  We have no regional boundaries.  You have no excuses.

If there are ANY more questions about our credibility and track record, all you need to do is CLICK THIS PARAGRAPH and read what the Baltimore Sun had to say about Grassroots and read the "Who's Who" of alums who have received College Scholarship Offers since our inception.

History of Team Maryland in the FBU National Championship Tournament

In order to gain respect nationally and turn the DMV into a Nationally respected Football HOTBED, we must take State All Star Teams and play against State All Star Teams from North Carolina, from Georgia, form Florida, from Louisiana, from Texas, etc.  We are off to an amazing start, but we still have work to do.

We must have a platform to compete against those teams and WE MUST WIN!  The platform must be a respected platform and when we participate in that platform, play against those state All Star Teams with the best that the DMV has to offer, we will begin to CHANGE EVERYTHING!!!  We have already started the process. As we change perception the colleges will Notice and MORE scholarship offers will come to the DMV when we become that Nationally respected Football Hotbed.

Football University is the ONLY National Platform that provides an opportunity for us to change our perception. They own the US Army All American Game which has the top 4 and 5 Star HS athletes each year that have committed to the top Colleges.  College Programs follow the US Army Game and they Follow FBU because both properties are owned by the same parent company, All American Games (AAG).

AAG created FBU to find the next group of elite middle school athletes that will one day have a chance to play in the US Army Game.  The connection between FBU and Major Colleges is purely undeniable.  FBU is critical to our overall objective, which is to maximize our athletes chances to compete for a college scholarship.  If you are not interested in playing college football, this is probably NOT the tournament for you and there are other opportunities that we can refer you to.

IF YOU ARE READY TO SIGN UP AND YOU DON'T NEED MORE INFO, REGISTER ONLINE IMMEDIATELY TO RESERVE YOUR SPOT BY CLICKING HERE!!!!!!

If you are not convinced yet and still need even more information to make your decision, here is more.....

FBU's National Championship Tournament at the 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade division is like the Little League World Series of youth football. NOTHING CAN COMPARE to it.  In 2012, our 7th Graders followed my lead and obliterated Central Virginia, Eastern Carolina, Chicago, Massachusetts, South Florida, and NE Louisiana on the way to the 7th Grade National Championship in 2012.  It was not about winning a ring.  It was about revolutionizing a State guys and earning National Respect, which in turn will increase scholarship offers for this region.

In 2016, our 8th Graders kicked the door in by obliterating the competition and winning 5 games in a row en route to a 41 to 14 thrashing of Team Seattle in the National Championship Game and we finished the mission.  One Championship at 7th Grade and one at 8th Grade in 4 years is pretty special.  We  have had more Final Four Teams than any region in the history of the FBU National Championship, but it is NOT enough!!!

That is how serious this is for us at Grassroots.  If we are going to be successful in changing the entire paradigm and perception about our region as a football power, which will in turn, manifest itself with more scholarship offers to our region, your child will have a better chance at earning one when he graduates.  You need for this to happen and we are the ones to make it happen.  For the last 5 years we put formidable teams together at all 3 age groups.  We are expecting to come back with National Championships at 7th and 8th Grade this year.

The cool thing is that the GYFL League has 3 options for you to consider that are all tied to and run by GYFL organizations.  You will begin to see promos for Team Metro Maryland and Team Northern Virginia soon.  But, this promo is for Team Maryland, the reigning National Champions.

As a region, when we begin to dominate the FBU Tournament at every level and win Championships in front of 200,000 viewers on the internet, along with the powerful marketing and promotion campaign of FBU, college coaches will look at us differently all over the country.  High School football coaches from all over will understand that the youth football leagues in the DMV are putting out monsters that are a force to be reckoned with.  The game will continue to change!!!

As more an more of them matriculate to college and dominate, you will see our average number of scholarship offers increase each and every year.  This is the mission that we are on at Grassroots and we are succeeding.  Check out the Grassroots Track Record if you need more proof. Click Here to see the details.

No single event or showcase is more important to the machine than the FBU National Championship Tournament.

How do I maximize my exposure to D-I, D-II, and D-III Colleges while still in middle school?

The answer is the Grassroots Hot Gates Showcase.  It doesn’t get any better than this for middle school and rising 9th Grade football players!!!!!

If you need more information about what the Hot Gates is, please continue to read.

The Hot Gates is High School Showcase Event for middle school prospects. The event is for rising 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th Graders.  Classes of 2021 - 2025.

Our Spring and Fall League participants have the benefit of auditioning for us, the top HS Coaches in the DMV, the top Scouting Services in the country, and the College Football Programs that recruit this area every weekend during Grassroots games.

In an effort to give a fair shot to those kids who are playing in other leagues, the Hot Gates was created.  Hot Gates I was held at St. Johns High School two years ago and it was free.  It was an amazing day for exposure.  Hot Gates II was at the U of Maryland last year and it was mind bending.

The problem with the first Hot Gates being free was that we had way too many athletes to truly evaluate the way we wanted to.  There were about 400 kids there. We decided to charge in year 2 to reduce the number of participants to the ones that are serious.  The fee was still nominal at $35 because we wanted to encourage participation and we HAD to cut off the registration at 300.

We will still continue to improve and expand our Burning Sands Showcase the first Sunday of October every year, but we realized that we needed to create a Pre-Fall Season/Summer event to maximize opportunities for us to scout and for young talented athletes to be scouted.

This Hot Gates event is a Shorts & T-Shirts version of the Burning Sands.  We want you to come with your Youth Club Organization Jerseys for easy identification.

Folks were always curious about how we name our events.  The Burning Sands is named after a grueling initiation process that fraternities put their pledges through. Before they can be admitted into the Brotherhood for life they must not only complete the initiation steps, but they must symbolically cross over the "Burning Sands" to make it into the fraternity.  This is very symbolic for us at Grassroots. There is a reason why our teams are always so good and the Burning Sands Showcase is a critical component of the process.  It plays a major role in our track record for our alums getting to the top High Schools and Colleges, which is just staggering for a youth league.  CLICK HERE to see for yourself.

(Image of FBU 9th Grade All Americans, including Hot Gates Alums)

The Hot Gates was named after the Battle of Thermopylae and taken from the movie 300, which is one of my favorites.  The 300 Spartans were outnumbered by the 10,000 Persians and to battle them in the open land would have been suicide.  King Leonidas positioned the Spartans at the Coastal pass of Thermopylae (aka the “Hot Gates,” so known because of the nearby sulfur springs), expecting that the narrow pass would funnel the Persian Army toward his own force in a narrow passageway that would mitigate the advantage that the Persians had.   With that being said, in order to get the most out of the Grassroots Experience, athletes must be willing to enter the "Hot Gates" and fight for their spots the same way the Spartans fought for their lives.

Many of the top public and private school coaches in the DMV will be on hand at this event and they will be looking for the next crop of talent to fit their program needs.  The question is, will yours be there to get noticed? Or will you be disappointed at the end of the season when the Grassroots Goons are going to the top public, private, and charter schools, along with the red carpet treatment?

In addition to exposure to the top HS coaches in the DMV, this is additional look for our FBU National Championship Teams.  We have 3 Teams now. This is NOT an official FBU Tryout, but we are always scouting for talent for our MD and NoVa State Teams.  This is a prelude to the 1st set of FBU National Championship Team tryouts coming in August for Team Maryland, Team Metro Maryland and Team Northern VA.

If you still need more reasons to commit, please continue to read.

This is also the first official tryout Youth Crab Bowl and Youth Capitol Bowl that will be truly spectacular this winter. From a scouting and exposure standpoint, the Hot Gates will be unmatched.  For those of you not familiar yet with FBU yet, or the Youth Crab Bowl and Youth Capitol Bowl, you will learn all about them and their benefits.  You will put yourself in position to be on the FBU, Crab Bowl, and Capitol Bowl radar screens as one of the top middle school athletes in the DMV.

Nationwide HS scouting service SEN will be on hand to capture all the action, rank the athletes, and provide unprecedented national exposure. In addition to their scouting prowess, the actual media production that SEN Television will put on will be spectacular.  No longer do we just have the FBU Platform of National Championship Tournament and the All American Games, but we are now on the selection committee for the the Under Armour 8th Grade All American Game, which is entitled, the UA Next Game. The Game will be played in Orlando, Fl right after the Under Armour High School All American Game.  Participants will spend a week with the Under Armour High School All Americans.

In addition, we are on the selection committee for the USA Football International Bowls to be played in AT&T Stadium (Jerry World) on Martin Luther King's Birthday in January of 2018. The opportunities for Exposure are legendary.  But it all starts with the Hot Gates!!!!  The Fall 2017 Football Season officially begins when you enter the Hot Gates. There will be so many HS coaches there that your heads will spin.  College Coaches from all over the DMV will be in attendance as well. Towson U, Howard, and Bowie State have already committed.  We expect t0 see Navy, Morgan State, Catholic U, Georgetown, McDaniel and Stevenson College.

Take a peak at the level of coverage that SEN provided for last years Hot Gates by clicking HERE.  The coverage is unreal.

The best news is that NOT ONLY will the event be held on at the University of Maryland on the same practice fields that the Terps use every day, EACH and EVERY Drill of the camp will be run by University of Maryland Coaches!!!!  Yes it is true....  Offensive Coordinator and QB Coach Walt Bell will work exclusively with the middle school QB's.  DB Coach Azzar Abdul Rahim will work exclusively with the Defensive Backs, etc., etc.

So as a middle school student athlete, you have the opportunity to be coached by and audition in front of a Big Ten coaching staff.  This is unprecedented and unheard of.  Only Grassroots has this type of access. The good news is that that Camp is open to Every athlete from every league, in every region that can get to the event.

There is absolutely no excuse NOT to attend.  The only issue is that the space will be limited.  We can not handle a showcase event with 500 kids and we are not interested in mass producing football. We are cutting off online registration at 300 and will only take walk ups until we are at capacity, so the first 300 that fill out this registration page and secure the payment will get the opportunity of a lifetime.

Here are the Event Highlights:

·        - Invitations for free admission to the Burning Sands for Crab Bowl and FBU Selections will be awarded.

·    ·  -Evaluations by SEN TELEVISION and ALL TOP AREA High School Coaches.

·        -First look for Grassroots Game Changer Evaluations for 2018.

If this information is not more than enough to get you to want to attend the best youth football event of the year, than we are probably not a good fit for you and we wish you the best on your youth football career.  But here is what I will finally say to the masses of youth football players and parents:

2017 Final Spring Varsity Regular Season Standings

Note:
**** The Loudoun County War Eagles are only playing Exhibition Games for the Spring Varsity Season. Their record and stats are in bold and underlined print.  They are not eligible for the playoffs.  Their points will be included during the weekly standings, but for purposes of points for playoffs, the Eagle Scores will NOT be included.

Note
: ****
Both Maryland Heat and Bowie Elite (DM) ended up with 4 - 0 Records.  Bowie Elite DM had a better overall Point Differential, but in tie breakers where every team does NOT play all of the same teams, we have learned that is is not fair to break the tie with Overall Point Differential.  We have learned that it must be done by the Point Differential for COMMON OPPONENTS.

If we use all opponents but everyone did not play all of the same teams, one team can benefit by not having to play one of the super teams, which will effect the point differential negatively for them.  Both teams had Moco Bearcats, MVA Raiders, and DMV Academy on the schedule.  However, MVA Raiders Forfeited the Heat Game, so we did not include any points for or against.  We used the scores from the Bearcats and the DMV Academy to determine the common opponent point differential, which is the only fair way to determine a final seeding.

Maryland Heat had the following point differential between those 2 teams:

  • MoCo Bearcats: 14 to 0 (+14)
  • DMV Academy: 28 to 6 (+22)
  • Total Heat Point Differential +36

Bowie Elite DM had the following point differential between those same 2 teams.

  • MoCo Bearcats:  40 to 8 (+32)
  • DMV Academy: 16 to 13 (+3)
  • Total DM Point Differential +35

Maryland Heat have the #1 Seed based on a +36 to +35 point differential for Common Opponents.

2017 Final Spring Junior Varsity Regular Season Standings
Note:  Read details regarding the Metro Va and Beacon House Seeding

Note:  Both Metro VA and Beacon House ended up with 2 - 2 Records.  Beacon House had a better overall Point Differential, but in tie breakers where every team does NOT play all of the same teams, we have learned that is is not fair to break the tie with Overall Point Differential.  We have learned that it must be done by the Point Differential for COMMON OPPONENTS.

If we use all opponents but everyone did not play all of the same teams, one team can benefit by not having to play one of the super teams, which will effect the point differential negatively for them.  For example, the Maryland Heat are the #1 Seed this season an have scored a lot of points.  Metro VA had them on the schedule and Beacon House did not have them, so we do NOT include the point differential of the Heat vs Metro VA game in the calculations.  Both teams played Moco, Bowie SVP, and DMV Academy.  So we included all 3 of those point differentials to come up with the final seeding.

Beacon House had the following record against those 3 Teams (1 - 2, with a point differential of -31).  Metro had the following record against those teams (2 - 1, with a point differential of -14).  When considering the record and point differential, Metro VA earned the #4 Seed in the Playoffs.
