Grassroots Nation!!!!

Allow me to introduce you to the Youth Impact Program.  This is truly an amazing opportunity being offered by former NFL Player Riki Ellison.  YIP partners with colleges and universities across the country to provide opportunities for inner city youth to have an amazing educational mentoring opportunity, combined with football as a hook to get them involved and engaged.  The goal is to CHANGE LIVES!!!

Check out the link below to get the basic information about the program, but this is awesome for us.  In essence we have the opportunity to provide 130 underprivileged 7th and 8th graders in the DC/Baltimore Metro region an awesome opportunity to change their lives.  The YIP and the University of Maryland have joined forces in this outstanding endeavor and are giving Grassroots the exclusive opportunity to market and promote it.  We consider this a true blessing and don't take it lightly.

The Youth Impact Program is looking for 130 who can benefit from this.

  • Robyn Jones has taken point on this initiative and we are excited to have her leading the program this year.  She has years of experience in education and a passion for Life Skills and Leadership that glows when she speaks of those qualities.  She can be reached with any questions at the following email:  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
  •  We will be taking applications from all over the DMV region (See below).
  • There is a Parent Interest Meeting on Wednesday May 17th.  Here are the details:
    • Benjamin Tasker Middle School
    • 4901 Collington Rd, Bowie, MD 20715
    • Time: 6:30pm Sharp.
  • Interviews for the Applicants will take place in Sunday May 28th at the Prince George's County Sports & Learning Center
    • Details coming soon.

We want to offer this opportunity to as many interested kids and parents as possible, then filter down to the 130 that can most benefit.  At the bottom of this email is a link to an application page.  All interested parties MUST apply.

*****NOTE*****  It will be imperative that the students be picked up at one central location at 7:30am to be transported by bus to the University of Maryland.  If the students do NOT have the ability to make to the central location each day, PLEASE DO NOT APPLY.  That location will be determined and communicated soon.

The Program lasts for 2 weeks (Mon – Friday)

Details:

·         Date:  Week #1 July 10 -14
            Week #2 July 17 -21
  Location:  Gossett Team House
                 379 Field House Drive
                 College Park, MD 20742
Grades: 7th & 8th
Total Kids: 130

·         Morning Sessions: Stem Education

·         Early Afternoon Sessions: Life Skills (Run by the US Marines)

·         Late Afternoon Sessions:  Football Skills and Drills

·         Cost:  Free of Charge

·         Perks: Under Armour Gear (laundered each night for workouts)

Note:  This program is life altering but it is NOT Easy.  It is NOT a football camp.  The football drills portion will be phenomenal, but these two weeks are designed to have a transformational effect on young people, with a special focus on At Risk youth..  Parents we will need you to be committed to this.  The Stem classes will be challenging.  The MARINES will be tough as they teach discipline the old fashioned way.  They will end every day having fun on the football field and it will ALL be worth it in the end.  But they will be coming to WORK hard and it won't always be fun.  We will have celebrity athletes showing up to inspire the kids during the camp.

Please review the website below for any additional questions or details about the program in general.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

We are so very excited to announce the launch of the RL52 Youth Football Camp!!!  Ray Lewis, Under Armour, GYFL, and the Mid Atlantic Sports Foundation are joining forces to bring an unbelievable experience to the youth of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area.  There has never been an event quite like this in the DMV.  This camp goes way beyond football.  Ray wants to show the kids something truly special.  We know he is a passionate mentor who believes in giving back to the community.  He did NOT want to just do football and he did NOT want to just do "Elite Athletes."

The BEST Part is that there is NO CHARGE for this event.........  Ray and Under Armour are truly into giving back!!!!!

This event is for ALL student athletes, no matter what level you may be as a football player.  Ray just wants to meet, bless, and train kids!!!  This event is open to ALL players from ALL leagues in the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area, AND BEYOND!!!!!! If you can get to Baltimore, you are eligible for consideration.

It is NOT a GYFL exclusive deal. It is NOT a Mid Atlantic Sports Foundation, Crab Bowl, or Capital Bowl deal. You do NOT have to play in GYFL to be selected for this "Invitation Only Event." We just happened to be blessed enough to be able to present the opportunity and want to use as a way to extend an Olive Branch across the aisle to everyone interested.

You just needed to follow instructions, have filled out the initial registration page and been one of the first 40 5th Graders, 40 6th Graders, and 30 7th Graders to have been CONSIDERED for this awesome chance.  The Pre-Reg is no longer available as the spots have been filled for this one, but filling out the form did NOT Guarantee a spot, but it guaranteed that you were in the running.  We decided to reserve the first 3 spots to the 3 parents that moved on this the quickest and they are listed below.  GYFL and Mid Atlantic Sports Foundation are so fortunate and humbled that Ray and Under Armour decided to include us to bring the kids.

Ray will mentor your child like he is one of his own.........        Seth Minter the Foot Doctor to work on speed.......

When I updated this page on 4/21/2017 at 9:57am, I was simply flabbergasted.  I had never seen a response like this for anything that we have ever done in my life.  I figured that if we started marketing this in late April, that by the beginning of May we would have at least 120 kids showing interest and we would send the invitation code.  I was expecting to get a significant number of hits to the page, and a percentage of those hits would take the time to fill out the Pre-Registration Page for consideration.  Well Ladies and Gentlemen, we had over 3,000 hits in less than 24 hours.........  As of May 2nd when we closed out the Pre-Registrations there were 6,060 hits to the page and 322 actual Pre-Registration applicants for 110 slots.

I have simply never seen anything like this.  When I told Ray he was in a state of Shock as well!!!!  As of the morning of 4/21, we were at 225 Pre-Registered student athletes and now we sit at 322.  It is a good problem to have but it will create disappointment for those that don't make the cut.  As I said, we are already in the process of finding ways to bless all of those who don't make this first cut, but now we must figure out how to deal with this reality.

Here is what we considered and what we planned to do to make this work.  We constantly talk about the importance of academics and character, along with athletic ability.  This situation provided an opportunity to put our money where our mouths were and honor some kids who have truly made the commitment to being bigger than an athlete.  We wanted to reward those who have taken it seriously and here is how we planned to whittle down to 110.  Those in the Pre-Registration database were expected to receive an email from GYFL/MASF representatives asking you to provide the following:

  • Copy of the most recent report card.
  • Essay from the student athlete answering the question, "Why is it so important to attend this Ray Lewis Camp."  No more than one page.
  • Recommendation from the school counselor on school letterhead regarding "Character" of the student-athlete.

Unfortunately for this run, we did not have the time or the manpower to utilize this Great Idea by Ray.  We did have a number of parents inquire about the process of where to send the essays, etc., but we were not able to fulfill the promise and get the information out in time, because we miscalculated the time that would be needed to order shoes, cleats and accessories.  We won't have the luxury of the next two weeks to get this information out.  So we decided to randomly select the masses of the kids for this opportunity, along with selecting certain kids that have exhibited a commitment to the qualities of Academics, Athletics, and mostly character over the years.

Today is the day that we select the final 110.  Those selected will be receiving emails tonight and tomorrow.  It will be imperative for you to follow the instructions immediately to reserve your spots.  You will receive a link to the Under Armour Page that you will need to access asap and provide all the necessary information and Under Armour will do the rest.

Here are some of the Camp highlights:

  • Camp will take place at the UA House 1100 East Fayette Street (Corner of Fayette and Colvin St.).
  • Saturday May 13th is the date.
  • Cost is FREE!!!!!! Invite Only.
  • Camp will be comprised of 120 5th, 6th, & 7th Grade student athletes.  GYFL and Mid Atlantic has 110 spots to work with, as Under Armour is giving 10 spots to Living Classrooms.  We would like to have as even a split across all 3 grades as possible, which is why we can't just take the first 110 that Pre-Register.
  • The Gear and package the athletes will get is just Priceless.  Athletes will receive the following: Compression Shirt, Shorts, Gloves, Socks, A Sack Pack, Training Shoes, Wristbands & Cleats...... Yest I said Cleats!!!!
  • Exclusive Foot Work Station, led by the one and only Foot Doctor, Seth Minter.
  • Boot Camp Station for Ray Lewis style work to build the body.
  • Ray will personally be running the Yoga Station and sharing his secret to a 17 year career.
  • Of course there will be a Football Skills and Drills Station.
  • The best part will be the mentoring and the Q & A provided to Ray Lewis himself!!
  • There is NO CHARGE for this event, but you must have an invitation code to be allowed in.

Ray will show put you through Boot Camp              Ray Lewis, Tony Kennedy and Coach Mike
and show you how he chisels his body!!                   at the 2016 Spring GYFL Championship

CRITICAL NOTE
:  For those that don't make the final 110 this time:

We know that you are going to be disappointed and Ray does too.  The space at the UA House is just not big enough for any more than the 120 total (110 from GYFL/MASF).  We are working on some major options for you TO BENEFIT AND TO SEE RAY!!!

Grassroots Spring Games:

Ray Lewis is making a commitment to Grassroots and he will be with us for the duration, so if you don't get a chance to meet him this time, this will NOT be the last time.  Ray will be at some of our Grassroots Games this Spring, so even if you are not playing in the League, I will let you know when he is coming so you can come meet him.

U of MD Youth Impact Program:

In addition, if any of the kids on this list fall into the category of At Risk, and can get to a central location in PG County from July 10th to July 21st, you will have first dibs on an opportunity to participate in the University of Maryland's Youth Impact Program.  It is one of the most phenomenal concepts we have every seen.  It is a 2 Week camp on the campus of the University of Maryland that is designed to be transformation.

Yes, there will be football every day to finish off the afternoon, but there will be STEM Education in the morning.  There will be Life Skills, Leadership, and Discipline training by the Marines in the afternoon.  Finally the players from the University of Maryland will teach football skills and drills each and every day for 2 weeks. The Program is sponsored by UA so shirts and shorts will be provide.  All of the details are in this link.  Please Click on THIS LINK AND READ IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!

We have not begun promoting this yet and we won't for the next week or so.  We want to give you guys the opportunity to have first dibs on the slots, so if your child does not get selected for Ray's Camp and he is considered "At Risk", please take advantage of this opportunity,  We are working on Ray's schedule to try to get him to spend a day at the Youth Impact Program and we are confident that we will be able to get it done.  Don't want to promise it just yet, but if he can't come, expect to see other celebrity athletes make an appearance to be a blessing to your child.

Finally, there are more perks for being on this list to those that were not able to be invited to this first camp.

Youth Crab Bowl and Capitol Bowl Camp:

  • Free invitation to the Youth Crab Bowl and Youth Capitol Bowl Exposure Camp.
  • GYFL and the Mid Atlantic Sports Foundation partnered in 2012 to bring a collaborative Youth Crab Bowl All Star Event to the DMV and it has been the most successful Regional Post Season Youth All Star Showcase in the Mid Atlantic Region for the past 9 years.  The 10 Anniversary this Winter will be the best ever.
  • From 2017 and beyond we will have Summer Tryouts in the month of July for all 8 regions that participate and everyone on this list, who did NOT get selected will get an invitation code to attend the tryout in June For Free!!!!  Details to come.
  • The Youth Capitol Bowl featuring Nova vs DC athletes will launch this winter at Georgetown University.  The Camps in July will be free to all who are on this database.
  • We can't promise you just yet that Ray will be in attendance, but we are damn sure working on it and feel very confident that we will make that happen.  But even if he can't make it to the Crab or Capitol Bowls, your experience will be breathtaking.

GYFL Hot Gates Camp at U of Maryland:

  • On Monday June 19th on the Campus of the University of Maryland, we will hold our 2nd Annual Hot Gates Showcase.  The Coaching Staff from the University of Maryland will be on hand to coach and run every position drill and evaluate your babies up close and personal.  Never been anything quite like this.
  • This is not sponsored fully be UA yet, and we have some expenses to pay, so we can't make it free, but you have a guaranteed spot before the slots run out and your cost will only be $10.00.  The General fee is $50.00 so being on this list will give you an 80% discount.

Top Players from the GYFL Spring Frosh League have a chance to be selected to represent the USA

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE MARYLAND HEAT, THE 2017 SPRING VARSITY GYFL CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!

The Best of the Best Rising 9th Graders from the Spring Varsity will not only have a chance to be selected
for the FBU 9th Grade All American game, but they will also have a chance to represent the
USA in the International Bowl in Dallas, TX next winter.  They will play U-16 for Team USA.

Below we have the results of the 2017 GYFL Combine held at the Sports & Learning Complex on 3/25/2017.  Please note that the times are NOT laser and there is always the potential for human error when hand timing.  On average, laser times are .2 of a second slower than hand times and are more accurate.  For example, a 4.66 40 yard dash by hand time, will on average be a 4.86 laser time.  So to get a more accurate assessment of your laser time speed, take your times here and add .2 seconds to it.

Please don't take these times and get an inflated opinion of how fast or slow you are as a middle school athlete.  This event was designed to prepare you for future combines that you will be evaluated on as you get into high school, as well as have get you exposure to HS and scouting services.  As a rule of thumb, it is possible with training to drop .1 of a second for each year that you are in high school.  For HS seniors there are minimum speed expectations that you will have for the position that you play.  For example, a RB should run NO slower than 4.6 if he wants his speed to be impressive to Major Division 1 programs.  4.40 to 4.60 is the top and low end range of speed for skill players (RB, WR, DB).  For LB's and TE's the top and low end speed would be about 4.50 to 4.70.  Pocket Passers would be about 4.60 to 4.85, while Dual Threat QB's would fall into the skill player category.  DT's and OL are not expected to be speed guys,  Speed Rushing DE would be in that LB category.

That means that if you are a skill player and running a 5.0 as an 8th grader, you are at the minimum speed level that you need to be in order to put yourself in position to run at least a 4.6 as a HS Senior.  A 4.9 as an 8th grader, will put you at approximately a 4.5 as a HS Senior.  While a 4.8 as an 8th grader, will put you at approximately a 4.4 as a HS Senior, which is about as fast as a HS Senior can realistically expect.  Going into College running a 4.4 forty will put you in position to get into the 4.3 range during college on a laser, which is smoking for skill players.

For the most part, the times look in order.  There are a couple of extremely low 40 times that I would add a tenth of a second or 2, but it is clear that Zion Larkins was the hands down fastest at the event. But again, don't allow the times to go to your head if they were faster than you thought and don't allow them to hurt your feelings if they were slower than you thought.

DMV Family and Grassroots Nation:

It is time to pull the cover back on a couple of the EXCLUSIVE Opportunities that having a relationship with Grassroots can afford your son.

I say DMV Family because it is not essential to actually Play in the GYFL to gain access to some of these opportunities. It is beneficial because all of our coaches and scouts from each one of our teams gets to see you up close and personal on a week to week basis, but this is open for kids who play in ANY League.

No matter what league you are from you have the opportunity to submit your tape, express you interest, participate in a GYFL event, combine, showcase, etc., to try to get yourself noticed at a few of the Invitation Only Events. When they won't even take your money, it must be hot!!!!!

Here we share just 2 opportunities that are simply "Sickening." One has passed and video is included, but the other one is around the corner.

#1. Under Armour Middle School Camp Series:

The Under Armour Camp Series has taken the country by storm in its first year in the middle school space. The atmosphere is electric, the staff is stocked with pro's and Hall of Famers, the gear is second to none and its coming to New Jersey Saturday May 20th 2017!

Hall of Famer Deion Sanders coaches DB's                    The Gear Package is just unfair

Some 7 on 7 invites have already gone out, of course 2016 All American's have already been invited, and the GYFL Game Changer's always come and set the tone among those and many other top athletes from the North East region!

Problem is with all this talent on one field only a few will be given the golden ticket to Orlando and the camp is now full. This is an invitation only camp which means you can't even pay your way in. If you have an ELITE middle school athlete and have NOT received your invite yet, don't wait submit your information to the link below for a shot at one of the few remaining slots and have a chance to compete in Jersey!

#2.  Under the Radar Baller Showcase.

Many of you know about Under The Radar Sports Videos. If you don't, then you are simply not plugged in and you need to be. But, they do Sports Highlight Videos at simply a different level.

They caught wind of the talent in the DMV and they CAME!!!! They showed up at Wise HS on April 9th with an INVITATION ONLY Elite Showcase to find the best of the best 8th Grade Ballers to compete for a National Highlight Video.  Of course we slipped in a few GYFL 7th and 6th Graders on the low.

Check out there work in the DMV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbNFzn0JCvU

We have been blessed to have 2 of our Super Goons already highlighted by UTR. Antwain Littleton and Zion Larkins already have some of the sickest highlight videos in the country getting hits all over You Tube.. Check them out and let us know who wants next:

Antwain Littleton
-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXB4-9P_Vc0)

Zion Larkins
-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYJkwJU1gUo)

But UTR wanted more from the DMV, and they want to see who has the absolute sickest ballers across the country. I say we do in the DMV, but we needed to show and prove.  They are sponsored by Battle and provided Shirts, Gloves and Mouthpieces, along with a ton of swag for the kids.

The folks from UTR wanted to know if we could compete with Dallas, where they have already been. Check the highlight video from their Dallas event and let me know if you think we outdid them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FN37K2fnqio&feature=youtu.be.  I say we crushed them but I am biased.

We had 52 of the best athletes in the DMV by INVITATION ONLY!!!  The majority were 8th Graders in the Class of 2021, but we did slip in a few 7th Graders and a few 6th Graders who have next!!!!

4 of our top performers were selected and invited to Los Angeles on May 6th to compete against the best from the West Coast in and unprecedented showcase event.  Congrats to the following:

  • Jalil Farooq (DB)
  • Zion Larkins (WR)
  • Caleb Coombs (WR)
  • Antwain LIttleton, Jr. (RB)

Summary:

Please remember that these 2 events are both "INVITATION ONLY", which means you can't even pay your way in. Obviously the UTR is over, but the Under Armour is yet to take place, so If you have an ELITE middle school athlete and haven't received an invite from another source yet, don't wait submit your information to the link below for a shot at one of the few remaining slots and have a chance to compete at the Under Armour Camp New Jersey on May 20th.

Lastly, there are 3 important steps to becoming an All American

1) Where you compete
2) Who you compete against
3) Who is watching

Chad Ricardo (The Voice of the GYFL)

Chad Ricardo is a Broadcast Journalist dedicated to shedding light on the positive accomplishments of student athletes, both on and off the field, while also aiding in their all-around growth and development.

Ricardo began working in High School sports as a National Scouter/reporter with a regional recruiting firm, before branching out to lead his own team. As Founder of The Ricardo Report,Chad and his team have been committed to providing coverage of student athletes in D.C., Maryland and Virginia for the last 3 years. Among his contributions, he is theOfficial Voiceof the Grassroots Youth Football League, multi-media contributor to the DCSAA, MCM and the host/ producer of his podcast, The Ricardo Report, carried by Fox Sports. He is the primary writer, talent, and editor (audio/video) of content available online at, www.RicardoReport.com, on twitter @RealChadRicardo and Facebook, The Ricardo Report, and will be debuting his television show in D.C. and Montgomery County in 2017. Also, Ricardo is a contributor to the monthly print newspaper, the Woodlawn Villager(Baltimore).

Chad with superstar GYFL Alum and Gonzaga RB Tyree
Randolph (Class of 2017)

A graduate of James Madison University, with a degree in Media Arts and Design , Chad Ricardo has been practicing his multimedia craft for 10 years. He began in radio before moving on to serving as Master of Ceremonies to live events and subsequently video. He is hard-working and goal oriented.

From Mike Anderson, the Founder and President of the GYFL, "Since Chad joined the GYFL as the official announcer, he has helped take the brand to an entirely different level.  He is simply one of the most captivating and amazing announcers in the country.  He is a extraordinary broadcaster, as well as tremendous advocate for student athletes.  The exposure that he provides for the top athletes through the Ricardo Report has been such a blessing to the DMV at the youth and HS Level."

Chad will be offering a service that has never been offered at the youth football level before........ Professional Media Training!!!!  We have discussed this before and thought about implementing it last year, but we just had too much on our plates.  But with the National Exposure the GYFL kids are getting now, it is imperative that we get them camera ready and prepared to answer questions with a camera in their faces and the bright lights on.  Our desire is to get them to College and they will have to present well.  All you have to do is watch and listen to Chad, and it will be evident to you that he KNOWS how to present.

Chad Doing what he does best..... Perform and Showcase.

NOBODY does it better than Chad, so who better to teach our youth how to do it than Chad? Details for the media training sessions will be available soon, at a very affordable cost that will have value far beyond whatever the prices point will be. There will be individual one on one sessions with Chad, as well as group sessions that will be even more affordable.

He is also though a dedicated family man, thus when he is not highlighting student athletes you will likely find him spending time with those who matter the most.

In the 8 years since Grassroots was founded, we have done some amazing things.  We have blessed a lot of kids and parents.  We have broken ground in many areas, but NEVER, have we done anything like what we did on Monday Feb 27th, 2017.  Pictured above you see members of the 2016 8th Grade Team Maryland National Championship Team.  Four of the best GYFL alums ever were on hand to enjoy the festivities and be honored as well.  Kasim Hill, Anthony McFarland, Marcus Minor, and Cam Spence were all honored. They are the anchors of the legendary 2017 U of Maryland Recruiting Class.

During that glorious evening, the Maryland Senate honored the National Champions with the presentation of a Senate Proclamation in the Senate Chamber during the Monday 2/27 session. TThe University of Maryland 2017 Commits took center stage and were honored separately first, then the National Champs took over.

The Legislature went in at 8pm on Monday night so the boys were be honored approximately 8:15pm after the session actually began. This is a night that will change the lives of these 40 young men and their families. There was a reception for the Team and family members prior to the start of the session in the Miller Senate Office Building. The boys and coaches will actually walked onto the Senate floor to be honored.

Senator Douglass J.J. Peters and Senate President Miller orchestrated the event and were in attendance, along with Senators and Delegates from all over the Great State of Maryland. Successful CEO's from the Chamber of Commerce will be on hand to greet the players, parents, shake hands and give out business cards.  Our babies will had a chance to meet some of the people they will hopefully be working for and with when their playing days are over.

President of the Senate Mike Miller      UMD Head Coach DJ Durkin         Barry Gosset with Ms. McFarland

Head Coach DJ Durkin and members of the U of Maryland Coaching Staff were present along with Head Coach Damon Wilson of Bowie State University. Members of the Board of Regents from the University of Maryland were present.  Mr. Barry Gossett (The U of Maryland Gossett Field House is named after him).  Gary Attman, the owner of Future Care was on hand to bless our kids.

U of Maryland incoming Freshman on the Senate Floor.

The Night was simply extraordinary and one we will never forget.  Ladies and Gentlemen, This is Grassroots. CLICK HERE to see our 7 Year Track Record, which clearly illustrates the Grassroots Difference.
