The only common opponent for the Heat and the Steelers was the MV Elite.  Maryland Heat defeated MV Elite 39 to 6 (+33).  DMV Steelers defeated MV Elite 26 to 6 (+20).  Due to the 13 point advantage in point differential, the Heat secured the #1 seed.

Congratulations to the Maryland Heat, your 2016 GYFL Varsity Champions!!!!!!

The Burning Sands Invitational was hosted by the Grassroots Youth Football League and gave athletes the ability to showcase their football abilities in front of the top private and public schools in the area in addition to FBU and Crab Bowl Coaches. There were current and former FBU All-Americans, Elite 101 members and Game Changers all in attendance.

After taking in all the sights and sounds of the 4th annual Burning Sands Invitational and scouting nearly 200 athletes from all over the Mid-Atlantic Region we have put together our Top 25 athletes at the showcase event.  The rankings took in the ability of each athlete in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades and we ranked them according to how we felt they performed.

CLICK HERE to see the Top Performer list.  You will need a premium membership but it is worth it!!!

Naples preview video

The single biggest event in Youth Football, period! Two of the biggest events in sports, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and the Little League World Series, collide and the result is the FBU National Championship.

64 Teams from all over the United States, representing their State/Region, battling in a single elimination tournament to see who is the National Champion. There are three divisions, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade all which will compete throughout the month of December to be crowned National Champion. There will be over 6,000 athletes representing thousands of youth leagues participating in the Championship.

Playing on a National Stage on “Championship Weekend” to become the real National Champion. For the second year in a row, the FBU National Championship - "Championship Weekend" will be held in Naples, Florida to showcase the best teams in the nation.

AAG believes that the nation’s top football athletes have the right to compete against other top talent of the same caliber! Most top football athletes never get tested on a consistent basis. AAG built the U.S. Army All-American Bowl to allow the nation’s top high school football players to compete against one another, and now AAG has created Football University’s National Championship and Regional Championship to allow the nation’s top 6th, 7th, and 8th graders the same opportunity! These opportunities prepare top athletes for the rest of their football careers and lives.

The amount of opportunity is unlimited!

How will you handle the opportunity that lies ahead?

How do I make a Team?

Team Maryland Represents the Maryland, DC, Nova, and Delaware Region.  We are a very small region but we have a ton of talent.  Team Maryland is the home of the 2012 FBU National Champions and we a very proud of that accomplishment, but we want MORE!!!

2015 is shaping up to be a stellar year for Team Maryland.  We expect to have extremely competitive teams at the 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Levels. Our official tryout was on Sept 27th and was posted on the FBU NC website, along with the GYFL website.  We had a Burning Sands Showcase event on October 3rd where we evaluated.

At this point there are no more official tryouts, but we still have roster spots available at all 3 levels.  If you are interested, please send a cover letter and highlight video to Team Director Mike Anderson at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. asap.

FBU is looking for the best 6th, 7th and 8th Graders in the country.

All age groups will have four teams advance all the way to Naples, Florida

Under Armour/GYFL Partnership

We will be announcing more details about the partnership throughout the Fall, as our entire league will begin the process of transitioning into Under Armour products from head to toe.  We Must Protect this House!!!  We will protect this house.  With such a cruch leading up to the Fall Season, we didn't have time to put our complete shoe and accessory package together for the kids and parents, so they will be allowed to wear whatever shoes and accessories they currently have for the Fall 2016, but beginning in 2017 the Grassroots athletes will be in official UA gear and apparel and accessories from Head to Toe.

The Sponsorship Deal from Under Armour will allow Grassroots Participants exclusive access to product and prices that will blow your mind.  The Program is still being developed and pricing agreed to, but you have the opportunity to put your orders in NOW!!!

Your direct contact is Mike Anderson and whatever you are interested in, all you have to do is email her the name of the product, the quantity, the size, and most importantly the Product #.  If you put an email request together and send it to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. , we will get in contact with you and schedule your order.

All of the products that we have access to are included in the catalogs along with the retail prices.  YOU Will NOT pay retail through the Grassroots deal.  Discounts range from 10% to 30% based on the product.

Also ask about our in stock quality products at 50% off of selected products while they last:

  • UA Highlight Cleats in sizes 10 through 14 (Black/White & Black/Orange)
  • Cold Gear Mock Turtlenecks in various sizes
  • Lineman Gloves in various sizes
  • WR Gloves in various sizes
  • Compression shorts in various sizes
  • Various T-Shirts and compression shirts

Let Tangie know what you are interested in and we will bring to the games on Saturdays in the Fall to make available for sale.

We look forward to doing business with you!!!

Coach Mike

The sponsorship deal with Under Armour is going to help take Grassroots Spring and Fall Tackle leagues to entirely different levels, but we can't forget that tackle is not for everyone.

Under Armour understand the importance of the game of football and wants to create options for those kids who either may not be quite ready for tackle, or whose parents may want them to get exposed to a less physical version o the game that is still loads of fun and can teach the fundamentals of this great game.  See www.UAFlag.com

Last spring my good friend and brother Lavar Arrington of Xtreme Procision brought an opportunity to me to help develop and field Fall Flag teams for an Under Armour XP Developmental Flag League. XP is on the cutting edge of proper football skill development and safe technique practices. It was a perfect fit for UA and XP to join forces and Grassroots was just humbled to be asked to help. We put our all into it and Year #1 was a rousing success.

Well year #2 is around he corner and there are still a few opportunities for interested kids to sign up for our North and South Divisions at 10U and 12U. The unique thing about the UA Flag League is that it Does NOT require your athletes to choose between Flag and Tackle. The games are only 1 hour and played one night per week!!!

Most of our kids still practice with their tackle teams, but use one night per week to hone their passing game skills and coverage skills during the week. It is almost like a highly competitive passing game practice under the watchful eye of the Under Armour brand.

Official League play will begin on Wednesday Sept 16th. We are asking for any interested clubs, parents, or kids, to inbox me immediately so we can get you plugged in to help Under Armour Protect This House.

I Will........ Will you?

Lastly, if there are any High School or rec clubs who have fields (grass or turf) with lights, Under Armour is looking to secure one more field for the games. If you are interested and can help, please feel free to hit me up immediately so we can lock that in. We don't need the entire field either. Be a great way to get in with one the hottest brands in the world!!!

Believe me, membership does have it's privileges!!!!

How do I maximize my exposure to Top High School Coaches and Scouting Services? How do I maximize my chance to make one of the Grassroots Post Season All Star Teams?

The answer is the Burning Sands Invitational IV for 5th - 8th Graders.

NOTE:**************Priority Weather Announcement******************

The Burning Sands event will take place unless of a SEVERE weather event.  Rain will NOT stop us.  St. Johns has a state of the art field turf stadium that can withstands prolonged rain.  Most of the weekend games that are being cancelled is because of the grass fields that will be destroyed.  We will be following the weather closely and in the event of the Hurricane status, we will postpone the event.  Stay connected with us on FB and this site will be updated as well.  For now, expect us to go through with the event.  We may be playing in snow or rain so that will not stop us.  But, we will NOT put your children in danger by any means.

THE BURNING SANDS MIDDLE SCHOOL SHOWCASE EVENT!!!!!!

The Burning Sands is a Showcase Event for middle school prospects (including current 5th Graders). Our Fall League participants have the benefit of auditioning for us, the top HS Coaches in the DMV, and the top Scouting Services in the country every weekend during Grassroots games.  In an effort to give a fair shot to those kids who are playing in other leagues, the Burning Sands has been expanded.  All of the top public and private school coaches in the DMV will be on hand at this event and they will be looking for the next crop of talent to fit their program needs.  The question is, will you be there to get noticed?.

Click the following link to get signed up.......ONLINE Registration is NOW OPEN!!!!!

In addition to exposure to the top HS coaches in the DMV, this is additional look for the FBU Teams State All Star Teams.  This is NOT an official FBU Tryout, but we are always scouting for talent for our MD State Teams.

Highlights of the Championship Games will be shown Christmas Day on Comcast Sports at halftime of the HS Crab Bowl, which will be aired on tape delay.  Click Here to learn more about the Youth Crab Bowl.

From a scouting and exposure standpoint, the Burning Sands is unmatched.  The top nationwide HS scouting services like Rivals.com, SigningDay, and SEN will be on hand to capture all the action, rank the athletes, and provide unprecedented national exposure.  The one and only YOUTH1.com will be on hand to capture every second from beginning to end, as they look for the next group of stars from the DMV to grace the Elite 101 and Freshman 450 lists.

Don't miss it.  Space will be limited, so sign up before spots run out!

This past Sunday on the scenic campus of St. John’s College High School the Grass Roots Youth Football League held the second annual Burning Sands Showcase for current 6th, 7th and 8th grade football players. Broken into two groups, the 6th&7th graders, and the 8th graders, the athletes were evaluated and instructed by nearly 30 public and private high schools from throughout the Delmarva. Maryland High School Crab Bowl powered by Under Armour

Grassroots is proud to be an official partner of The Maryland Crab Bowl, Powered by Under Armour.  This is Maryland's only statewide High School football all star game. The game will feature the best Senior all stars from public and private schools in the state of Maryland.

The Game will consist of 90 players split on 2 different regional teams. The Washington regional team will consist of players from Montgomery, Prince George's, Anne Arundel, Calvert, St.Mary's, Charles counties, and the Eastern Shore. The Baltimore regional teams will consist of players from Howard, Baltimore County, Baltimore City. Frederick, Washington, Allegheny, Cecil, Harford, Carroll, and Garrett.

The Maryland Crab Bowl is in its 8
th year and has alumni that include Tavon Austin (WVU/ St. Louis Rams), Jelani Jenkins (Florida, Miami Dolphins), Kyle Fuller (Va Tech, Chicago Bears), Ego Ferguson (LSU, Chicago Bears), 5 other NFL players, and over 450 college football players. Rivals, Scout and 247 Sports considered the Crab Bowl the top in-state all-star game in the country.

We are also excited about this partnership because it will allow our GYFL alums to have an opportunity to play in an elite level HS All Star Game. Of course we are locked in heavy with the US Army All American Game, as well as the Under Armour All American HS Game.  But, we understand that only a small percentage of our alums will be invited to those exclusive Nationally televised games.  The Crab Bowl allows for the masses of our HS alums to play in a next level game and get maximum exposure during the peak recruiting period for colleges.

High School Alums had the opportunity to try out of for the HS game by attending one of the Crab Bowl Evaluation Camps in July of 2015.  You guys don't want to miss out on the Crab Bowl Experience.

At the most important period of the HS recruiting season, our middle school athletes will receive unprecedented exposure.  The top HS coaches will be on the sidelines of our games.

This is all brought to you by Tony Kennedy of the Mid Atlantic Sports Foundation.  To learn more about what they do and offer visit www.midatlanticsportsfoudation.org.

We want to create more opportunities for 5th Graders so each 6th grade team will have the option to reserve up to 10 spots on their rosters for 5th graders.  So 5th graders get an early jump on the radar screen by attending the Burning Sands and Crab Bowl Tournament.  If you have a son interested in this amazing opportunity in ANY of the above regions contact the Team Director at the contact number listed for tryout information.

We are very excited to build the youth Crab Bowl to the same level as the High School game.  What we love so much about the Crab Bowl is that the Final Four and Championship Games will be played at the prestigious McDaniel College in Westminster, MD during the 19th and 20th of December.

The first 2 rounds will be played at various facilities in the Baltimore Metro Area at select top notch field turf facilities on the 12th and 13th of December.  That will allow all of the local public and private high school coaches to see these kids up close and evaluate them in an All Star setting.

The HS Game will be played on Saturday the 19th.

As much as we enjoy the travel of FBU, very few if any of the local high school coaches are going to be traveling with us.  This is a great opportunity for players who are good, but may not be deep on the radar yet, to really get some good exposure in the heart of the recruiting season.  While Team Maryland is competing Nationally in the prestigious FBU National Championship Tournament, the rest of the DMV will be competing locally for Mid Atlantic Regional Supremacy against some of the best teams in the North East.

The youth players From DC, MD, Northern Va, and Delaware will have an opportunity to audition for the Crab Bowl in 4 different ways:
  • Playing in the GYFL Spring League
  • Playing in the GYFL Fall League
  • Attending the Burning Sands Invitational in October of 2015
  • Series of additional regional tryouts to be scheduled as needed
The youth players From Central PA, Central VA, New Jersey, and Tidewater Va, will have an opportunity to audition for the Crab Bowl by the following:
  • Regional Tryouts set up by their regional Team Directors (See Above for Regional Team Directors Info)

What more could you ask for?  If you want to be a part of THE GRASSROOTS YOUTH CRAB BOWL, contact Neil Hamilton at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more information!!!

Please read the following portion of this information carefully so that you understand the ongoing selection process from A to Z.

How Do We Determine a Champion?

We begin with 12 teams at each age division.  There will be 6 games on Sat 12th and 6 more on Sunday 13th.  There will be a total of 18 games played the first weekend on 3 different fields in the Baltimore Area.  We will use the 8th Grade as an example, with 6th and 7th being identical formats.
  • In 8th Grade there will be 6 games played on Saturday from 9am to 9pm.
  • There will be 6 winners and 6 losers.
  • The 6 in the losers bracket will play each other in 3 games beginning Sunday morning at 9am.
  • The 6 in the winners bracket will play each other in 3 games beginning Sunday afternoon at 3pm.
  • By Sunday Night we will have the following breakdown:
    • 3 Teams will be 0 -2 and knocked out of the tournament
    • 6 Teams will be 1 - 1 and technically still alive to move to the Final Four Round on Sat Dec 19th.
    • 3 Teams will be 2 - 0 and advance to the Final Four Round on Sat Dec 19th.
    • The 4th team in the Final 4 will be the 1 - 1 team with the highest point differential.
      • We will add up all the points the offense scored in the two games, and subtract the points the defense gave up in the two games.
      • Of the 6 1 -1 teams, the team with the highest point differential moves on as the #4 Seed in the Tournament,
    • The #1, #2, and #3 Seeds will be determined by the point differentials of the 3 undefeated teams.
    • Seed #1 will play Seed #4
    • Seed #2 will play Seed #3
  • Final Four Games will be played at McDaniel Field
  • On Sunday the Championship Game will be played.  There will be no consolation games on Sunday.

NOTE: Due to the fact that each team did not play each other the equal number of times, tiebreakers were determined by head to head competition.  The I5 Elite and Southern MD Heat both had 5-2 records and they split with one another.  I5 received the #2 seed based on best head to head point differential.

NOTE: Due to a game being cancelled between the DMV Stars and Fatz Bulldogs, both teams did not play the same number of games.  They are both tied with 2 wins and played each other once.  Loudoun won the head to head and earned the higher seed.  They would have both played each other in the first round either way so it does not effect the first round.
